Jos Luhukay (born June 13, 1963 in Venlo , the Netherlands ) is a Dutch football coach and former player.

origin

Jos Luhukay's father was born in the Moluccas , which are now part of Indonesia ; he fled to the Netherlands because the situation on the islands was life-threatening (→ Moluccas in the Netherlands ) and later met a Dutch woman, Luhukay's mother. Both parents died early.

Career as a player

Luhukay always played in midfield. He began his career at the age of 15 in his hometown with the Dutch club VVV-Venlo . After four years he moved to Venray SV in 1982, where he stayed until 1984. He then played for VOS Venlo for two years until he returned to VVV-Venlo in 1986. In 1989 he moved to SVV Schiedam until June 1991. At his last Dutch club, the RKC Waalwijk , he played from July 1991 to June 1993. In 1989, Luhukay was part of the Kleurrijk Elftal , the team that was largely killed on Suriname Airways flight 764 . He himself only escaped this catastrophe because at the time of the game he was playing in the relegation with his club VVV-Venlo.

In the summer of 1993 he moved to Germany after 15 years and 139 appearances in the honor division (27 goals) and 48 second division games (12 goals) in the Netherlands. There he had two missions for SV Straelen (1993–1995 and 1996–1998) and KFC Uerdingen 05 (1995–1996). With Uerdingen, Luhukay also played two Bundesliga games . His greatest success was his promotion to the Oberliga Nordrhein with SV Straelen in 1996. After 20 years he ended his playing career there in the summer of 1998.

Career as a coach

One month after completing his playing career, he took over SV Straelen as head coach. Two years later he moved to KFC Uerdingen, with whom he finished fifth in the Regionalliga Nord in 2002 and caused a sensation in the DFB Cup with wins against Energie Cottbus and Werder Bremen . The elimination in the competition came for the Uerdinger only against 1. FC Köln . In 2002 Luhukay moved to the Bundesliga, where he was co-trainer at 1. FC Cologne alongside Friedhelm Funkel (until October 2003), Marcel Koller (November 2003 to June 2004) and Huub Stevens (July 2004 to June 2005) was. In November 2003, Luhukay was the head coach of the Bundesliga match against Hannover 96 , as Friedhelm Funkel had previously been dismissed - the FC lost the match 2-1. From summer 2005 until his resignation on August 11, 2006, Luhukay was head coach at the second division club SC Paderborn 07 .

Luhukay as coach of Borussia M'gladbach (2007)

On January 2, 2007, he was committed by Borussia Mönchengladbach as another assistant coach of Jupp Heynckes . After Heynckes resigned on January 31, 2007, Luhukay took over the post of head coach, initially until the end of the season. Mönchengladbach had to say goodbye to the 1st Bundesliga for the second time in the summer of 2007. Equipped with a 2-year contract until mid-2009, Luhukay led the traditional club as second division champions in 2008 to an immediate rise. After Borussia had lost six of the first seven games of the 2008/09 season , he was released on October 5, 2008.

On April 14, 2009 Luhukay took up his new post as head coach at the second division club FC Augsburg , with whom he finished third at the end of the 2009/10 season . The relegation games against the third from bottom of the 1. Bundesliga, 1. FC Nürnberg , were lost and Augsburg missed promotion. On May 8, 2011, Jos Luhukay made clear with the FCA with a 2: 1 against FSV Frankfurt with second place the direct promotion to the 1st Bundesliga. The first Bundesliga season in the club's history ended in 14th place. Already on the 33rd matchday the team achieved relegation. Following the last game of the season on May 5, 2012, Luhukay dissolved his still valid contract.

For the 2012/13 season Luhukay moved to Hertha BSC as the new head coach . He signed a contract in Berlin that ran until June 30, 2014 and took over the team from Otto Rehhagel . There he was promoted to the Bundesliga for the third time as the second division champion in 2013 . On February 5, 2015, Hertha BSC separated from him and his assistant.

For the 2016/17 season , Luhukay was signed by VfB Stuttgart , who had previously been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . He received a two-year contract. On September 15, 2016, Luhukay resigned from his coaching post after just four season games. Quarrels with sporting director Jan Schindelmeiser about the direction and the commitment of the players Takuma Asano , Benjamin Pavard and Carlos Mané - Luhukay wanted more experienced German-speaking players instead - were the decisive factor.

In January 2018 Luhukay became the new coach of the English second division club Sheffield Wednesday . The club was suspended during the summer break of 2018 due to financial violations and Luhukay started the 2018/19 season with an almost unchanged team. On December 21, 2018, he was dismissed after only one victory from the previous ten games, the team was in the bottom third of the table with 24 points from 22 games, five points above the relegation places.

On April 11, 2019, Luhukay took over the second division team of FC St. Pauli , which after the 28th matchday of the 2018/19 season was four points behind the promotion relegation place in 6th place in the table, as the successor to Markus Kauczinski . After the close relegation in the 2019/20 season , the club separated from him shortly after the end of the season.

Others

From July to December 2007, Luhukay took part in the 54th DFB soccer teacher course at the German Sport University Cologne to acquire a soccer teacher license.
