Huub Stevens (born November 29, 1953 in Sittard / Netherlands as Hubertus Jozef Margareta Stevens) is a former Dutch football player and today's coach .

As a player, he played for Fortuna Sittard and PSV Eindhoven between 1970 and 1986 and 18 times for the Dutch national football team between 1979 and 1985 . As a coach, he has looked after clubs in the Netherlands, Germany , Austria and Greece since 1993 , the longest of which was the German Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 , with whom he won the DFB Cup twice and the UEFA Cup in 1997 and from the fans to "Coach of the century" was chosen. With FC Red Bull Salzburg , Stevens became Austrian champions in 2010 .

He is considered a trainer who places great value on discipline and strict tactical order. Because of his strict, sullen manner, he is also called the Kerkrade growl .

Player career

Beginnings in Sittard

Huub Stevens grew up in the Stadbroek district of Sittard, a working-class district that mainly consisted of small terraced houses. His father was a miner and retired early at the age of 48; he died in a car accident in 1971. Stevens learned to play football in the youth of RKSV Sittardia, which in 1968 merged with Fortuna'54 from Geleen to form Fortuna Sittardia Combinatie , later renamed Fortuna Sittard . In addition, he completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith , after training he worked in the Demi steel company and a hardware store. When he signed his first contract with the FSC at the age of 16, he got a job in the warehouse of a Sittard tricot factory.

He made his debut in the Eerste Divisie as a Vorstopper under coach Evert Teunissen in the 1970/71 season in a 0-1 defeat against SC Heerenveen . In this match he had to cover for one year older Kees Kist , with whom he would later compete for the Netherlands in Orange . In 1972 Cor Brom took over the coaching position at Fortuna SC, who had previously earned his spurs as co-trainer for Rinus Michels at Ajax Amsterdam and as head coach at SBV Vitesse in Arnhem . He led the team in 1973/74 in the first season of the season in first place, which they secured a place for the promotion round at the end of the season. In the end, Fortuna had to be content with fifth place in the table. In the decisive match of the promotion round against fourth place in the table, FC Wageningen , Limburg suffered a 0-1 defeat and remained in second place.

Since Fortuna SC Stevens refused a monthly pay increase of 100 guilders (about 90 German marks), he decided in 1975 to change the club. Stevens' teammate from the junior national team, Adrie van Kraay , recommended him to Kees Rijvers , his coach at the reigning champions PSV in Eindhoven . Stevens was invited to a trial training session and then offered a two-year contract. His coach Cor Brom from Sittard accompanied him to his negotiations, which caused him some trouble with the club's board.

Top football in Eindhoven

At PSV, Stevens first had to prove himself in training before he got his chance from coach Kees Rijvers. It came in the 1975/76 European Cup : Stevens was substituted on in the 3-1 away win over Ruch Chorzów . However, he had to wait until March for his first appearance in the starting lineup. Piedr Strik , a regular in the PSV defense since 1968, was injured in the European Cup match at Hajduk Split . Against FC Den Haag on March 7, 1976, Stevens was on the pitch for the first time in the league at kick-off alongside football greats such as René and Willy van de Kerkhof , Jan van Beveren , Jan Poortvliet , Kees Krijgh and Ralf Edström . In his first match, his opponent was center forward Henk van Leeuwen , he also scored his first of only 15 goals in the Eredivisie , on the submission of substitute Willy van der Kuijlen , who made the final result with the second goal of the game. In the second leg against Split, Stevens was allowed to prove his skills again from the start, in nine other league games until the end of the season and in the cup final on April 7, 1976, which PSV won 1-0 after extra time against Roda from Kerkrade .

Three days before the decisive game for the championship against Rotterdam rival Feyenoord on the penultimate matchday, Stevens broke his fibula and was in a cast for six weeks; PSV won 4-1 without him and secured the championship. Jan van Beveren, before whose goal Stevens had defended this season, called his teammate “a very important switching station in the team” on the occasion of the championship celebration. Jan Reker , who worked with Stevens as a coach and co-trainer for many years, describes Limburg as “unshakable, winner, rough shell - hard core, man with a strong sense of justice” : “He was and is a man who never went into defense goes, but immediately starts a counterattack. "

In the following season, Stevens developed into a regular PSV player. The championship and cup double in 1976 was followed by another championship in 1978 and winning the UEFA Cup .

From 1979 to 1985 Stevens played 18 times for the national team . He scored his only goal on October 17, 1979 for the 1-1 final against Poland . A defeat would have meant early elimination in the European Championship qualification. At the European Championship in Italy in 1980 he was part of the Dutch squad and was used in the first two group matches against Greece and Germany ; the Netherlands were eliminated after the group stage.

Coaching career

At the beginning of the 1990s, Stevens completed his training as a trainer in Cologne and sat in with Jörg Berger , among others .

Beginning with Roda Kerkrade

In 1993, Stevens began his coaching career with Roda Kerkrade and led the club several times in the UEFA Cup. Most recently in 1996, when he and Roda were eliminated in the first round against FC Schalke 04 ; he was to take over this club as a coach two weeks later.

UEFA Cup winners with FC Schalke 04

On October 9, 1996, he became the coach of FC Schalke 04 . In his first season he reached twelfth place in the Bundesliga and - surprisingly for many critics - won the UEFA Cup . The two finals against Inter Milan each ended 1-0 for the home team, Schalke 04 kept their nerve on penalties (4-1). The Schalke team around the Belgian Marc Wilmots became known as the "Eurofighter". In 1997/98 FC Schalke 04 reached a UEFA Cup place in the Bundesliga and were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. Two years followed without participating in an international competition (10th and 14th place).

In the 2000/01 season , Stevens built a new team with players like Andreas Möller and Ebbe Sand . Schalke only missed the German championship in the last seconds of the last day of the match. In addition, the 2001 DFB Cup was won. Stevens and Schalke repeated this success in 2002, but Schalke dropped out in the preliminary round of the Champions League and landed in the Bundesliga after a weak first half of the season . Stevens had already announced during the winter break that he would be joining league rivals Hertha BSC at the end of the season . On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the club in 2004, more than 10,000 fans of FC Schalke 04 voted for their team of the century. They chose Huub Stevens to coach this team.

Hertha BSC

In the 2002/03 season, Stevens reached fifth place in the Bundesliga with Hertha BSC after some initial difficulties and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup. After the 2003/04 season had started with many point losses, Stevens was on leave on December 4, 2003 due to continued unsuccessfulness.

2nd Bundesliga with 1. FC Cologne

For the 2004/05 season Stevens signed a contract with Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Cologne , with whom he rose to the top of the table in the Bundesliga at the end of the season. However, Stevens canceled the contract at the end of the season in order to be with his seriously ill wife in the Netherlands more often.

Return to Roda Kerkrade

In 2005 Stevens returned to his former club Roda Kerkrade in the Netherlands . The 2005/06 season ended in 8th place in the Dutch Eredivisie . The new season was similar, and on February 2, 2007 Huub Stevens broke his contract to move to the German Bundesliga club Hamburger SV.

Catching up with Hamburger SV

On February 2, 2007, Stevens was the successor to Thomas Doll, who had previously been on leave, as coach of Hamburger SV , whom he led from last place via the UI Cup to the UEFA Cup within 15 games . His contract ran until the end of the 2007-08 season. In his last game as HSV coach, Karlsruher SC was beaten 7-0 - Hamburg's second-highest victory in the Bundesliga.

PSV Eindhoven

From the 2008/09 season Stevens was coach of PSV Eindhoven . He did not extend in Hamburg to return to the Netherlands to his wife suffering from Crohn's disease . Stevens signed a two-year contract in Eindhoven until 2010, but he resigned on January 28, 2009. At that time, Eindhoven was only fifth in the Eredivisie, 15 points behind the leaders. The reason for the failure was that it “didn't click” between him and the team, ”said Stevens.

Red Bull Salzburg

Huub Stevens at Red Bull Salzburg

From the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Stevens worked as a coach at Red Bull Salzburg , where he got a two-year contract. His first major success was on August 4, 2009, when he won the 3rd round of the Champions League qualification over Dinamo Zagreb , which meant that the club had reached a European competition for the first time in the “Red Bull” era. Because even if he failed in the subsequent play-offs of the Champions League, participation in the Europa League was certain. There the team won all six games in its group and thus moved into the round of the last 32 teams as group winners, but then retired there against Standard Liège . With Salzburg, Stevens ended the 2009/10 season first in the table and was thus the first time in his coaching career to become a top division champion. This success earned him the title of Trainer of the Year 2010 in Austria. On April 8, 2011, there was nine rounds before the end of the championship for a mutual separation between Stevens and the club. At this time the team was in 3rd place and was five points behind the first-placed FK Austria Wien . His successor was Ricardo Moniz , who had come from Hamburger SV before the season and had worked as a technology coach until then.

Return to FC Schalke 04

After Ralf Rangnick resigned as coach of FC Schalke 04 on September 22, 2011 due to a burnout syndrome , Stevens was introduced as his successor on September 27, 2011 and given a contract that ran until summer 2013. Stevens reached the quarter-finals with Schalke in the 2011/12 season in the Europa League and 3rd place in the Bundesliga and the associated participation in the Champions League. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he made the best Bundesliga start in Schalke's history with Schalke. In the Champions League, Schalke reached the round of 16. On December 16, 2012, FC Schalke 04 took Stevens on leave after a series of games without a win and falling to 7th place in the Bundesliga table.

PAOK Saloniki

For the 2013/14 season , Stevens took over the position of head coach at the Greek first division club PAOK Saloniki . On August 14, 2013, Metalist Kharkiv was banned from all European competitions in 2013/14 by the UEFA Chamber of Appeal due to involvement in a 2008 manipulation scandal . UEFA then decided that PAOK Saloniki would play in the play-offs instead of Metalist Kharkiv. So on August 21, 2013 Huub Stevens met his "old" club Schalke 04 again in the Veltins-Arena . The game ended with a 1-1 draw. Schalke won the second leg in Saloniki 3-2 and thus moved into the group stage of the 2013/14 Champions League. Stevens was released on March 2, 2014. The reason was that the gap between second in the table and first Olympiacos Piraeus with 19 points had become too big to be champions.

Twice VfB Stuttgart

On March 10, 2014, Stevens took over the 15th place in the Bundesliga team of VfB Stuttgart as the successor to Thomas Schneider, who was on leave . With twelve points from the last ten games of the 2013/14 season , VfB managed to stay under Stevens. After not renewing his contract, which was running until the end of the season, he returned to VfB Stuttgart on November 25, 2014 and replaced his successor Armin Veh . Again Stevens managed to save VfB Stuttgart from relegation. His contract was again not extended after relegation, and he left VfB again.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

On October 26, 2015, Stevens took over the Bundesliga team of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, who was in 17th place in the table, from Markus Gisdol, who had previously been released . On February 10, 2016, he resigned from his post due to an arrhythmia . His engagement was only limited until the end of the 2015/16 season , as Julian Nagelsmann was appointed head coach from the next season when he was signed. Under Stevens, TSG only won one of ten games and scored eight points. He himself assumed at the time that his coaching career was over. His successor Nagelsmann took over the coaching position immediately.

Interim trainer at FC Schalke 04

After head coach Domenico Tedesco was released , Stevens took over FC Schalke 04 on an interim basis and for the third time in mid-March 2019, which after the 25th matchday was four points behind the relegation place in 14th place in the table. A day after his appointment, the club announced that Stevens and his assistant coach Mike Büskens would look after the team until the end of the season. Under Stevens, FC Schalke 04 scored 10 points by the end of the season. The season ended with 33 points on the 14th place in the table, with relegation on the 32nd game day.

official

On June 28, 2015, the annual general meeting of FC Schalke 04 decided to form a new sports advisory board consisting of Stevens, Mike Büskens and Ebbe Sand . With the acceptance of the head coach position in Hoffenheim, Stevens gave up this function again.

On June 3, 2018, Stevens was elected to the supervisory board by the general meeting of FC Schalke 04.
