Gyula Kertész , also Julius Kertész (born February 29, 1888 in Kiskálna , † May 1, 1982 in New York City ) was a Hungarian football player and coach .

Career

He played from 1906 until the outbreak of World War I together with his two brothers Adolf and Vilmos at MTK Budapest . In 1912 he was also used in a game of the Hungarian national team .

After a war injury, Gyula Kertész had to give up his active career as a football player.

In 1921 Kertész became one of the first paid football coaches in Germany with his involvement with Union 03 Altona . He also gained fame by hiring some foreign "stars" such as his two compatriots Ferenc Hirzer or the goalkeeper Elemér Müller and because he organized several highly regarded international friendly matches with several thousand spectators.

Between 1923 and 1928 Kertész worked for Victoria Hamburg and several clubs in Scandinavia and France . In 1928 he moved to FC Basel in Switzerland . Then Kertész went back to Germany and from January 1931 took over the coaching position at Hamburger SV . In the following one and a half seasons he was able to successfully rejuvenate the HSV team and win the North German championship title twice.

In 1932 Kertész moved to VfB Leipzig , where he was dismissed on May 15, 1933 for “financial reasons, caused by the economic hardship” of the club, as it was said by mutual agreement. Because of his Jewish origins, he could no longer work as a trainer in Germany. Kertész emigrated to the USA in 1938 and worked there in the record industry.

Gyula Kertész lived in the USA for more than four decades and died in 1982 at the age of 94 in New York City .
