Özcan Arkoç (born October 2, 1939 in Hayrabolu , Tekirdağ Province ) is a former Turkish football goalkeeper and coach . His football name was (and is) Özcan since this first name was mistaken for the surname due to a misunderstanding at the beginning of his time in Austria .

Player career

Özcan began his career as a youth player in Turkey with Vefa Istanbul . He then played in the first Turkish league, today's Süper Lig , at Fenerbahçe Istanbul (1958–1962) and Beşiktaş Istanbul (1962–1964). During this period he also completed his nine senior international matches . He made his debut in the Turkish national team shortly after his 19th birthday on October 28, 1958 in a 1-1 draw against Belgium . In 1964 he moved to Austria to FK Austria Vienna in the 1st Bundesliga . From 1967 to 1975 he then played as a goalkeeper for Hamburger SV in the German Bundesliga . He was the club's regular goalkeeper until 1974 when he was replaced by Rudi Kargus . At Hamburger SV, he played 159 Bundesliga and a total of 207 competitive games.

Coaching career

After his playing career ended, he worked from 1976 to 1977 as an assistant coach at Hamburger SV. From the 13th match day on October 29, 1977 he replaced the "bird of paradise among the coaches" hired with high hopes at the beginning of the season from Rudi Gutendorf as head coach, whose failure at the time was also interpreted as the failure of general manager Peter Krohn . Özcan reached in his first coaching season the 10th place in the table with eight wins in 22 games. For the following season he was replaced by the start coach Branko Zebec , who led HSV to the first championship since 1960.

In his other coaching stations with the second division Wormatia Worms and Holstein Kiel , he was released early. In Turkey he could not achieve any major success as a coach. Özcan Arkoç was naturalized in 1980 and lives in Norderstedt .
