Gerd-Volker Schock (born April 8, 1950 in Bad Schwartau ) is a former German soccer player and soccer coach .

Player career

The offensive midfielder Gerd-Volker Schock began his football career in 1969 as an amateur contract player at VfB Lübeck . In the following years he also played for Sperber Hamburg and 1. FC Phönix Lübeck before moving to VfL Osnabrück in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1974 . For this club he completed 205 games and scored 95 goals.

Thereupon he was signed by Arminia Bielefeld in 1979 for a transfer fee of 350,000 marks . With this club he rose to the 1st Bundesliga in the first season . In the first division he played 57 games and scored 23 goals. In 1983 he moved back to VfL Osnabrück in the 2nd Bundesliga. At short notice he took over the team during the season as a player- coach , but could not prevent the club's relegation.

Coaching career

He then began his coaching career in 1984 as a youth and amateur coach at Hamburger SV . He was later assigned the task of assistant coach under Willi Reimann for the club's professional team. Schock replaced Reimann as head coach on January 5, 1990. After initial success, so he reached a UEFA Cup place with his team , he was dismissed as head coach on March 10, 1992 after a 2-0 home defeat against 1. FC Nürnberg . During his time as a Bundesliga coach, he achieved 28 wins, 22 draws and 24 defeats.

For a short time he took over the care of the youth players of Hamburger SV again, before he switched to the Oberliga Nord in 1993 as head coach at TuS Hoisdorf . After three years with the upper division, he moved back to Hamburger SV to take on the role of amateur coach. He only took on this task for a short time, as there were disputes with the then coach of the professional team, Felix Magath .

From 1996 to 1998 Schock worked as a sports manager at VfL Osnabrück (Regionalliga). In 1998 he took over the coaching post there and led the team to the championship. He had to give up his job prematurely due to a hearing loss during a game for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga against Chemnitzer FC in the summer of 1999. From 2002 to 2004 Schock was a coach at Holstein Kiel in the Regionalliga Nord . Due to several sudden hearing loss, he resigned from office in 2004.

Others

In 2009 Gerd-Volker Schock was accepted into the VfL Osnabrück team of the century. In the position of the center forward he prevailed against 2nd place Addi Vetter and Thomas Reichenberger .
