There he became Thomas von Heesen's assistant trainer on February 12th that year . After his resignation, he headed his first game as responsible club coach on August 31, 2008 in the 2-2 draw against Alemannia Aachen . A week later he was given a contract as head coach until June 30, 2009, which was extended by two years in January 2009. Under Oenning, the "club" succeeded in returning to the Bundesliga after two wins in the relegation games against Energie Cottbus in summer 2009. After 1. FC Nürnberg had finished the first half of the 2009/10 Bundesliga season with the penultimate place, Oenning was given leave of absence as a coach on December 21, 2009. His successor was Dieter Hecking .

Since the 2010/11 season Oenning was employed as assistant coach under Armin Veh at Hamburger SV . After Armin Veh's leave of absence on March 13, 2011, he and the head coach of the second team Rodolfo Cardoso took over the team initially on an interim basis until the end of the season. On April 28, 2011, Oenning signed a new two-year contract as head coach until June 30, 2013. After 13 Bundesliga games without a win across the seasons, however, he was dismissed as head coach on September 19, 2011 by mutual agreement. In the 2016/17 season , Vasas Budapest was top of the table under Oenning after ten game days and ultimately finished third.

On November 14, 2018, Oenning took over the second division team of 1. FC Magdeburg as the successor to Jens Härtel , which was in 17th place in the table with 9 points after 13 matchdays. He received a contract until the end of the 2018/19 season . Under him, the team got 21 points up to the 33rd matchday, which means that the direct relegation was determined prematurely. Before the last match day, the club announced that they would not extend the expiring contract with Oenning.
