The club became known for its football department. The first team, whose players are also known as red blouses , has been playing in the fifth-class Oberliga Westfalen since the re-introduction of the division in 2012 . In the 1966/67 season she joined the then second-rate Regionalliga West . The club took part in the DFB Cup twice. The venue is the 24nexx Arena .
history
The parent clubs
The Hammer Spielvereinigung 03/04 was created on August 23, 1922 through the merger of the soccer club from 1903 and the Hammer Spielverein from 1904 . Football came to Hamm at the beginning of the 20th century. The driving force was Jan "Bisko" Vloobergh from Antwerp , who was employed in the Hammer wire industry and trained high school students from Hammer Osten on the large parade ground.
Hammer FC 03 was founded on April 11, 1903 by secondary school students . The later government director Kurt Matthaei became the first chairman of the association . In July 1912, the Gymnasiale FC Hamm joined the club. The latter was founded on February 25, 1903 by students from the state high school and was the city's first football club. In 1919 the football club merged with Hammer TV, which was founded in 1859, to form TuS 59/03 Hamm . This merger was resolved in 1922 as part of the clean divorce . Hammer FC 03 became Westphalian runners-up in 1911 after the team lost 3-1 in the playoff for the championship in the Ravensberg / Lippe district against FC Olympia Osnabrück . Until the merger to form the game association, the FC always remained in the shadow of the game club.
The Hammer Spielverein, in turn, was founded in 1910 when the football department of Hammer TV became independent. The gaming club was dominated by merchants and craftsmen and was supported by the petty bourgeoisie. The game club was more successful in terms of sport. In 1912 the team was promoted to the first-class Westphalia district league. Eight years later, HSV secured the Westphalia Championship with seven points ahead of Preußen Münster . The Hammer qualified for the West German Championship , in which SV Kurhessen Cassel was beaten 2-1 after extra time in the quarterfinals . In the semifinals, the end followed when VfTuR Munich-Gladbach won the game 1-0. Previously, the game club had leased a piece of land on Ostenallee in 1914, which it was later able to acquire thanks to support from its members.
Fusion until World War II (1922 to 1945)
With the merger, Hammer SpVg became the largest football club in Westphalia. In the years after the merger, the game association was one of the top Westphalian teams, but remained in the shadow of the big clubs such as Arminia Bielefeld or VfL Osnabrück . In 1924 the Hammer became vice-Westphalian champions behind the Bielefeld team. After several third places, the Westphalia Championship was not within reach again until the 1931/32 season . With eight points ahead of SC Unna 08 , the hammer secured the championship in the eastern group of the eastern group of the Westphalia regional league .
In the finals of the Westphalia Championship , the game association met SpVgg Herten , who won the first leg in Hamm 8-0. The second leg in Herten was canceled when the score was 2-0 for Hamm for unknown reasons. The Herten team won the replay 5-1. A year later , the team missed qualifying for the newly created Gauliga Westfalen as fourth . Now the hammer continued to play in the second-class district class and came across local rivals such as SV Bockum-Hövel or later VfL Altenbögge on a regional level . In 1936 the gammers were relegated to the third division and a year later almost passed through to the fourth division.

In 1945 Hammer SpVg merged with SC Rote Erde Hamm to form TuS Rote Erde Hamm . However, the merger was reversed in the same year. HSV initially played in the district class . At the beginning, the team did not get beyond mediocrity, before they rose as runner-up behind Borussia Lippstadt in the newly created 2nd regional league in 1950 , where they managed a 10-1 victory over TuRa Elsen from Paderborn in the promotion season . Two years later, this league was dissolved and the game association was included in the state league , at the time the highest amateur league in Westphalia. In 1953 he was relegated to the district class. Two years later, they were promoted back to the regional league when the Hammer became district class champions with three points ahead of local rivals VfR Heessen . The 1956 newly created association league was missed as tenth in the table.
The rise to the new Westphalian upper house succeeded in 1957 with eight points ahead of the SG Massen . During the season, the team was able to beat SuS Kaiserau 9-2. Apart from fourth place in the 1958/59 season, HSV fought against relegation. In 1961, the relegation only succeeded in detention. The hammer ended the season with equal points, in which the team lost 8-1 at home to Germania Datteln , with TBV Lemgo and TuRa Bergkamen . After a 1-1 draw against Bergkamen, the 4-0 win over Lemgo secured the hammers relegation. In the following years the “red blouses” became more and more successful, while the local rivals gradually slipped out of the association league as a result of the mining crisis. Under the new coach Arthur Gruber, the Hammer were able to celebrate the championship in Group 1 in the 1965/66 season with a point ahead of SpVgg Erkenschwick . Since the champions of group 2 SSV Hagen waived the final, the hammers became Westphalia champions without a fight .
This was followed by the promotion round to Regionalliga West, where the Hammer met Hagen, Bonner SC and VfR Neuss . Hamm and Hagen finished the round with 6: 6 points each, after the Hammer won 7: 1 against Bonn on the last day of the match and Hagen did not get beyond 1: 1 in Neuss . A decision game was scheduled in neutral Herten , in which the hammers were accompanied by around 2,500 fans. The game ended 2-2 after extra time. The decision was made in favor of the hammer after a coin toss . A week later, the West German regional league teams Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen made it to the Bundesliga, which made the promotion round to the regional league worthless and all four clubs rose.

Due to the late promotion, the Hammer could no longer strengthen sufficiently for the regional league and fought against relegation from the start. In addition, the team was hit by bad luck with injuries. In the 2-1 home win against Arminia Bielefeld, the club record that is still valid today was set with 18,000 spectators in the Jahnstadion . At the end of the season , the third from last place was not enough for relegation, as Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen relegated from the Bundesliga again and only Alemannia Aachen made the promotion. Back in the association league in 1968 it was only enough for runner-up behind SpVgg Erkenschwick. This qualified the hammer for the German Amateur Championship.
There the “red blouses” prevailed against FC Rastatt 04 and VfB Kiel and met FC Wacker Munich in the semifinals . The Munich “Blausterne” won the first leg in Hamm 3-0, while the Hammer won the second leg in Munich 3-2, which was not enough for the final. The hammer remained a top team in the association league and barely missed the championship in their group in 1971 . The team ended the season with the SVA Gütersloh tied . The playoff in the Beckum Römerkampfbahn ended 2-2 after extra time. In the replay in the same place, the Gütersloher prevailed 2: 3. The subsequent qualifying game for the German Amateur Championship was lost 3: 4 against Sportfreunde Siegen . Then the team broke up and the 300,000 mark indebted club slipped down into midfield.
Before the 1975/76 season , the club made headlines by signing several Polish players and handed over to Egon Piechaczek, who was involved in the Bundesliga scandal , as coach. Piechaczek let play his connections to the police sports club Wisła Krakow . The project was financed by the fish dealer Otto Bühl. It was only enough for fourth place and the team broke up again. Financial difficulties let the game association slip into the table cellar in the following years. In 1977 the hammer only secured relegation after two play-offs against TSV Bigge-Olsberg , before the hammer relegated to the national league a year later as bottom of the table. After the direct resurgence, the "red blouses" succeeded with five points ahead of SC Recklinghausen the association league championship and the direct march into the Oberliga Westfalen.

In the upper league, the hammer was able to establish itself in the midfield of the league and in the first two seasons after the rise achieved audience averages of over 2,000. In the 1980/81 season , the game association took part in the DFB Cup for the first time and prevailed in the first round with a 3-2 win in the replay against Concordia Hamburg . In the second round the end came after a 4-0 defeat at KSV Hessen Kassel . In 1981, Eintracht Heessen , another club from Hamm, was promoted to the league, which quickly took over the local leadership role and was Westphalia champion in 1983 and 1985. Both times, however, the Heessen team missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga .
Difficult times began for the game association, marked by the relegation battle. For this, the club has earned a reputation for working seriously and being in the black financially. However, critics accused the club's management of naivety and insufficient willingness to take risks. In the 1982/83 season , HSV was able to qualify for the DFB Cup again and won its first round match at SVO Germaringen 2-1. In the second round, the team met Bundesliga club VfL Bochum and scored 1-1 after extra time. In the repetition game, the Bochum team clearly prevailed 6: 1.
With the decline of Eintracht as a result of the collapse of the Hammer Bank in 1987, the "Red Blouses" took over the local leadership role again. The curious 1989/90 season brought the hammer down. Five teams finished the season with 26:34 points. While SpVgg Erkenschwick, SC Hassel and VfB Rheine saved themselves from relegation due to the better goal difference , the game association was able to leave FC Gütersloh behind because of their better goal difference . Now the hammer had to carry out a relegation with the vice-champions of the association league. In the amateurs of SG Wattenscheid 09 the team lost 0: 1 and then parted ways with 1. FC Recklinghausen 3: 3. The Hammer still led 3-0 at halftime.

Three years later, the team missed promotion when the hammer ended the association league season tied with TSG Dülmen . In front of almost 5,000 spectators in the neutral Waltrop , the Dülmen won 4-2 after extra time. A year later, the runner-up behind VfB Hüls was enough for promotion to the upper league, as the re-introduction of the regional league in the upper league of Westphalia increased promotion.
In the only fourth-class league, the hammer conceded an 8-0 defeat at SpVg Beckum in the 1994/95 promotion season . A year later , the game association finished sixth. In the following years things went downhill again and the hammer slipped back into the middle of the table. In 1999, the team had to relegate back to the association league when they were knocked off bottom of the table. The low point of the season was a 10:10 defeat by the amateurs of VfL Bochum.
Only with great effort could a further relegation be avoided in the association league season 1999/2000. There followed several years between midfield and relegation battle in the association league. It was not until 2006 that the game association managed to return to the league. The team trained by Wolfgang Sandhowe became champions with 19 points ahead of local rivals Westfalia Rhynern . Despite a 0-1 home defeat against VfB Hüls on the last matchday of the 2006/07 season , the league could be celebrated.
In the following season 2007/08 Thomas Stratos took over the coaching office and the team reached eighth place. The hammer thus managed to qualify for the newly created NRW league , which replaced the upper leagues of Westphalia and North Rhine from 2008 . Coach Stratos left the club for personal reasons and moved to SC Wiedenbrück in 2000. René Hecker was the new coach of the game association.

As table sixteenth in the 2008/09 season , the hammer were initially relegated under coach Hans-Werner Moors . Since the SV Schermbeck initially received no approval for the next season, the HSV could hope to stay in the league. It was not until the beginning of July 2009 that it was decided that both Schermbeck and the Hammer Spielvereinigung would remain in the NRW League. A year later, the “red blouses” were the third from last. After a fifth place in the 2010/11 season, Lars Müller took over as coach. Under Müller, the hammer were runner-up a year later behind SV Lippstadt 08 and were promoted to the re-introduced Oberliga Westfalen.
On November 13, 2012, the club separated from coach Müller. His successor was Sven Heinze, who led the team to twelfth place and thus relegation. Goran Barjaktarevic took over the coaching position for the 2013/14 season . After Barjaktarevic was fired at the end of February 2015, the club signed Oliver Gottwald as his successor until the end of the season. In November 2015, the hammer made headlines nationwide when the former national player David Odonkor was signed as the new sports director. In the 2016/17 season, the game association wintered on a promotion place, but only came third. A year later , the team finished fourth, before the Hammer only managed to stay up in the 2018/19 season with a 3-0 win on the last matchday at FC Gütersloh. Three points were deducted from the team because they were not eligible to play.
The 2019/20 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The hammer team was at the bottom of the table when they were knocked off, but remained in the league because the relegation was suspended without further ado.

Stadion
The center of the sports facilities of Hammer SpVg is the 24nexx Arena , in which the first team plays their home games. The stadium, located in the east of the Hamm-Mitte district, officially has a capacity of 8,500 spectators. The stadium was opened in 1965 and was called Mahlberg Stadium until February 17, 2008 . It was named after the former chairman of the association, Hans-Otto Mahlberg. After that the stadium was called EVORA Arena and since July 2018 24nexx Arena .
A stadium expansion has been under discussion since 2006. Initial planning for a stadium (11,251 spectators) is currently in progress. The draft corresponds to the DFB guidelines for the new third division and has been approved by the DFB. The costs for the first expansion stage amounting to around 1.3 million euros were raised through funding from the city, sponsors and the association. According to the statutes of the NRW League, the guest area was fenced in and has a separate entrance. After the necessary credit had been approved and the city of Hamm had approved the 50 percent funding, construction began on the first partial grandstand of the new Evora Arena in winter 2009/10. The 40 meter long west stand offers space for 932 spectators in 14 rows, a 15th row, which can be extended, has an additional 20 comfortable seats. New sanitary facilities were also installed on the north side of the grandstand. There is now a fan shop on the south side, in the immediate vicinity of the catering area. The association's own contribution amounted to approx. 600,000 euros, the total investment volume was approx. 1.2 million euros.
athletics
Helmut Wilshaus became the German javelin throwing champion in 1947 . A year later, Günther Pesch became German runner-up in the 100-meter run . The 4 x 100 meter relay of Hammer SpVg became German runner-up in 1949. The 4 x 400 meter relay was German runner-up in 1967 and 1968.
