Westphalia Championship

The two group winners determined the Westphalia champion in the two legs. In contrast to the previous year, the Westphalian champions qualified directly for the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga , while the runner-up had to play additional qualifying games against the fourth in the Oberliga Nord Holstein Kiel . The games took place on May 10th and 13th, 1978. Wanne-Eickel prevailed and became Westphalia champion.

Playoffs for the Oberliga Westfalen

The two ninth and tenth placed teams identified further participants in the Oberliga Westfalen as a precautionary measure in the first and second leg. As a result of the merger of the Gütersloh clubs, the tenth and eleventh places moved up from Group 1.

Playoffs of the ninth

The games took place on May 13-19, 1978. Altena prevailed athletically. Since a Westphalian team was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga and DSC Wanne-Eickel was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga, the playoffs were meaningless. Both teams qualified for the league.

Promotion to the Association League

The introduction of the Oberliga Westfalen also had an impact on the national leagues. Due to the many vacancies, there was an increased promotion to the association league in the 1977/78 season. Unlike in previous years, not only the five relay champions, but also the respective runners-up and third parties rose directly into the association league. The fourth in the table identified further climbers in a promotion round. The following table shows the first four places in the five national league seasons of the 1977/78 season:
