He signed top players like Klaus Solka , Rainer Plankermann and Wilfried Lieck . With these he reached the Bundesliga in 1972/73 and immediately won the German championship. He repeated this success in 1976.

The association renamed itself several times and was called u. a. The football department of VfB-Altena, which is located in the Reineckestadion of the sports center at Pragpaul, could reach the third highest division as a football club. The Westphalian Football League , which was introduced in 1978 , was a member when it was founded, but was relegated to the Association League in 1981 . Players who made the leap into the professional field in the 1970s included Hans-Jürgen Andexer , Alfons Sikora and Ingo Peter .

In the recent past, VfB Altena even had to return to the district level. The low point was the relegation to the district league A, which fell behind arch rivals FC Altena 69. In the meantime they reached the regional league (sixth division) again, but could only stay there for two years. After the district league relegation in 2006 you had to compete again in the district league A, in which you are currently playing the games.

Handball

Since 2007, after a few years, VfB Altena has been setting up its own handball department as the strongest handball club under the merger name HEA-Altena (merger of VfB, TSV and TS Evingsen) - as it did before. In the beginning of the 2007/08 season, VfB Altena reported three senior teams (district league, district league B and district class), an old men's team that did not take part in the game, and all youth teams (A to F youth). In the 2011/12 season, three men's teams and five youth teams (B to F) played. The first team rose in 2011 to the district league and in the following season in the state league.

In addition, the VfB handball players have been organizing the traditional Altena handball days since the late 1970s. This major event usually takes place on the Ascension weekend in and around the Pragpaul sports center. Between 60 and 100 teams travel to Altena for this purpose. In addition, as part of the school project, VfB supports all-day handball working groups at the Altena schools.

chess

The chess department is called Turm Altena .

In 1939, the Turm Altena 1939 eV association was founded as a competitor to the Altena chess club that existed at the time . Nine members of the Altena chess club were dissatisfied with the development in this club, as this club was not given the opportunity to compete with players from other clubs. The founding members included Otto Metz, Heinz Plotzheim and Josef Wein. Otto Metz became the first chairman of the new association. After a short time, the number of members grew to over 20, so that the Altena team could take part in the district championships with two teams in their first season. Although many players were drafted in the Second World War, the game operation could be maintained until 1943. In the post-war period, any club life was banned by the Allies. When an application to resume play was approved, the two Altena chess clubs had to merge at short notice, as only one chess club was allowed in each city. From the outset, however, it was contractually stipulated that once conditions had normalized, the clubs would split up again immediately, which also happened after two years.

As the Altena chess club went downhill, the importance of Turm Altena 1939 eV grew. More and more top players of the Altena chess club switched to local rivals, so that Turm Altena soon with Metz, Issel, Voigt, Herms, Kirchhoff, Beck, Adomeit and Dohmen was able to provide a team of considerable strength. After Gerndorf, Randelhoff and Krist joined the club, the first team was able to advance into the association class. Randelhoff, Metz and Voigt developed into top players in the district after a while.

When Voigt had become district champion several times, he was also able to achieve the title of South Westphalia champion. He then moved to the Bundesliga team Solinger SG. With the death of Issel and the move from Metz to SV Werdohl, a sporting low began for Turm Altena. However, the club was now so solid that it was able to overcome the crisis.

With the merger with VfB Altena, a new upswing came for Turm Altena. The entry in the register of associations took place on July 1, 1979. Finally, the association finally found a good gaming venue in Burg Holtzbrinck , which can be attributed to the dedication of the chess-loving city director Dr. Gramke had to thank. Grandmaster Pachmann gave a simultaneous performance in the castle town and through the initiative of the chairman of the chess department, August Linnenlücke, the German youth championship was held in Holtzbrinck castle.

The game operations of the chess department were also intensified in the mid-1970s: four teams, a youth team, a women's team and two senior teams took part in the championships of the Sauerland chess district.

At the district championships in 1977 young people in the chess department took second, third and fifth place, which proved the good youth work of the club. In 1980/81 the chess department had to overcome a temporary crisis when several top players left the club and the first team was relegated to the district class. During this time, however, a few members were found who helped to overcome the crisis with a lot of effort and work. The chess department grew to 45 members. In the very first year the promotion to the district league was achieved.

At the same time, the 1st team was strengthened by some new talents. The teams were able to hold their own in their class until the early 2000s. Due to the death and professional retirement of several club members in the following years, the number of members has plummeted, so that there is currently only one team that fights in the district class of the Sauerland chess district.
