The Burg Holtzbrinck is a meeting place in the center of Altena . It can also be rented for celebrations and conferences. The building was given the name "castle" because of its castle-like construction.

history

Holtzbrinck Castle is the oldest town house in the city. The building was first mentioned in 1643 when it was bought by the rent master and ex-count Georg Holtzbrinck (approx. 1610–1664). The oldest part of the house probably dates back to the 16th century .

After the death of Georg Holtzbrinck, his son Stephan Johann Holtzbrinck (1636–1703) took over the building. Between 1673 and 1689 he made major changes to the building so that it was roughly the way it is today.

When Louise Eva Anna von Holtzbrinck (granddaughter of Arnold Ludwig von Holtzbrinck ) married Hans von Carlowitz , ownership of the castle passed to him in 1894. His second wife Elfriede had renovations carried out and the stables and service accommodation converted into apartments. In 1972 she sold the building to the city of Altena. It was then restored over many years and then declared a community center in 1976. In 1980 and 1981 an underground car park was built in front of the castle, on which there is a rococo- style garden in front of the castle .
