from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhard "Bernie" Vossebein (born March 14, 1925 in Bochum ; † January 12, 2021 there ) was a German table tennis player . He was twice German vice-champion in singles and seven times German champion in doubles and mixed.

Career

Vossebein began his career at the Blau-Weiß Bochum and Post Bochum clubs . He then played for VfL Bochum in the 1946/47 season . After an interlude at ESV Blau-Rot Bonn from 1947 to 1950, he returned to VfL Bochum in 1950. Here he came to his 16 appointments in the national team and to the four times participation in world championships. Vossebein hit the headlines in the run-up to the 1956 World Cup . At first it was not considered by the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) , which many criticized as not justified in terms of sport. In the end he was nominated, and a fundraising campaign was carried out to cover travel expenses.

Bernie Vossebein was twice in a final for the German individual championship and had to be content with 2nd place: in 1949 he lost to Dieter Mauritz , in 1956 to Conny Freundorfer . He had more success in doubles and mixed competitions, four times he was first in mixed, three times in doubles. In 1952 he was ranked 2nd in the DTTB rankings.

In 1958 Vossebein switched to the ETuS Wanne Eickel association. Around 1959 he retired from competitive sports. From then on he worked as a supervisor and trainer in the youth sector. From 1971 to 1987 he worked as an association trainer in WTTV not only for the active players (among other things he looked after the future German master Wilfried Lieck ), but also for coaching training. Since 1987 Vossebein has been a trainer at the TTC Altena club . He also trained the youth of the TTC Post Hiltrop.

Vossebein is the only German who has participated in more than 50 national championships as a player, coach and supervisor since 1942. In 1965 he was honored with the gold pin of honor by the West German table tennis association WTTV .
