Dieter Mauritz

Dieter Mauritz (born November 21, 1918 in Berlin , Prussia , † April 3, 1988 in Gütersloh , North Rhine-Westphalia ) was a German table tennis player and functionary. Between 1936 and 1949 he was German champion four times and was the seventh President of the German Table Tennis Association from 1965 to 1981 .

Active career

Mauritz was the son of a major . In 1921 the family moved from Berlin to Barmen . His mother encouraged his interest in table tennis, which he initially pursued as a hobby at home with his two brothers. In 1933 he became international Belgian champion in singles and doubles. At first he achieved regional successes with tennis , from 1936 he concentrated completely on table tennis.

Mauritz played his first international game in 1936 against France. As a result, he was nominated for the national team a total of 31 times by 1952. He took part in four world championships. By 1933 he was listed among the top ten in the world rankings.

He was also involved in the first international match for a German team after World War II . On January 24, 1950, he competed against Sweden in Gelsenkirchen together with Helmuth Hoffmann and Heinz Raack . Between 1936 and 1949 he was the only player in the West German Association for a long time to be four times German champion in men's singles. It was not until 1962 that Eberhard Schöler became another master from this regional association. Mauritz played for the clubs Barmer TC, SW Wuppertal, BW Oberkassel, MTV Munich and TC Gold-Weiss Wuppertal (from 1948).

Even after the Second World War, Mauritz was still sporadically active in tennis. In 1947 he became German university champion, he was active at the TC Iphitos Munich club.

Work at the DTTB

After the end of his active career, he took on tasks at the DTTB . First he was a sports manager from 1952 to 1961, in 1961 he ran unsuccessfully for president of the association and was defeated by Kurt Entholt with 46:76 votes . After he renounced his participation in the federal general assembly, Mauritz was finally elected unanimously as the new president in Borkum in early July 1965. He held this office until 1981, when he no longer ran. His successor was Hans Wilhelm Gäb . During his term of office the introduction of the Bundesliga , the implementation of the World Cup in 1969 and the European Championship in 1978 in Germany and the engagement of full-time coaches fell.

In 1976 he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . Because of his services, the DTTB made him honorary president in 1981.

After his death - on April 3, 1988 - the board of directors of the DTTB donated the Dr Dieter Mauritz Memorial Prize . This is awarded to people who have made a contribution to the German table tennis sport. For example, on June 14, 2001, Diane Schöler was awarded this prize.

Private

After the Second World War, Mauritz studied law at the University of Munich and received his doctorate in law. at the University of Cologne. In 1952 he was admitted to the bar. He then founded a law and notary's office in Gütersloh, with which he earned his living from then on.

He was married to Sigrid, geb. Niemöller (* July 28, 1927, † July 7, 1999) and had two children, namely Astrid (* July 11, 1954, † January 14, 1971) and Dietrich (* September 15, 1957).
