The 12th World Table Tennis Championships took place from January 24th to 29th, 1938 in London (England) in the 8,000-seat Royal Albert Hall and in Wembley Hall.

Overview

This time there were some innovations: The height of the net has been reduced to 6 inches. And the American "snap surcharges" were no longer permitted. The time rule was also modified: a game should be over after a maximum of 20 minutes. Otherwise the winner is whoever is in the lead. In the event of a tie after 20 minutes, the next point decides if it is earned within five minutes. If nobody has won a point after five minutes, the game is drawn. This time situation occurred in the game Richard Bergmann (Austria) against Dieter Mauritz (Germany) at 19:16 for Bergmann in the third set. However, the team captains agreed to continue the game normally - and Bergmann quickly won.

For the men, the 16 teams were divided into two groups. Germany started in Group 1 with a 5-2 defeat against the USA. In the end, the three teams from Austria, USA and England were tied at the top of this group. Therefore play-offs were scheduled in which Austria could prevail. In the second group, Hungary won unbeaten. In the final, the Hungarians benefited from the hard tables and the lower nets and won the World Cup for the ninth time with 5: 3.

useful information

  • When he arrived, Bohumil Váňa got lost on the bus. Unfortunately, he didn't speak a word of English. So he walked around the bus stop and asked everyone, "Ping-pong? ... ping pong? ". At some point someone understood what they wanted and made sure that they could take the right bus to the venue.
  • For the first time a World Cup final will be broadcast on television: The BBC will broadcast the final between Vana and Bergmann .
  • At some tables, a string was tensioned on the edge as a test in order to audibly recognize edge balls.
