Thóra Beregi

Dóra Beregi (* 8. August 1915 as Dorothea Berger in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian and later English table tennis -Nationalspielerin. She became world champion in doubles in 1950.

Hungary

The left-hander was born in Budapest in 1915 under the name Dorothea Berger. She later changed her name to the Hungarian form Dóra Beregi. At the national Hungarian championships in 1937 she won doubles with Magda Gál and mixed with Erno Földo. She defended this title a year later, in doubles with Ida Ferenczy and in mixed with Victor Barna . In 1937 and 1938 she was nominated for the world championships . In 1938 she reached the quarterfinals in singles and in doubles with Ida Ferenczy the final, in which they were subject to the Czechs Vlasta Depetrisová / Věra Votrubcová .

England

In 1939 Dóra Beregi moved to England. Here she married an Englishman named Harry Devenny under the name Dora Berger in 1941 and thereby acquired English citizenship. So she was eligible to play internationally for England.

In 1947/48 she was ranked sixth in the ITTF world rankings .

In 1948 and 1950 she took part in the World Championships under the English flag. In 1948 she won gold with the English team. In doubles with the Scot Helen Elliot she won silver (behind Margaret Franks / Vera Thomas from England), in mixed with Ferenc Sidó she won bronze. In 1950 she became double world champion with Helen Elliot by winning the final over the Hungarian-Romanian couple Gizella Farkas / Angelica Rozeanu . The English team came in third.

Australia

In 1950 Dóra Beregi moved to Australia. In September 1951 she won all competitions at the Australian Open in Adelaide. In 1955 she ended her career as a competitive athlete.

Private

Dóra Beregi is married and has one son (* 1949).
