Fritz Höger Prize for brick architecture
The Fritz Höger Prize for Brick Architecture is awarded by the “Brick Building Initiative - Two-Shell Wall Marketing e. V. "awarded, international architecture prize. The "Brick Building Initiative" was founded by the German brick industry.

The naming of the award is understood as an honor of the German builder and architect Fritz Höger Höger is considered one of the leading representatives of North German brick expressionism .
The award is given to structures whose realization combines economic, ecological and design aspects and uses the potential of brick as a building material . The aim of the competition is to give both architects and the product brick a new public. Brick is understood as a generic term for façade bricks made from clay, which are also known as facing bricks or clinker .
The competition is endowed with a total of 10,000 euros. The prize money is staggered as follows:
- 1st place: 5000 euros
- 2nd place: 3000 euros
- 3rd place: 2000 euros
It is at the discretion of the jury to distribute the prize money differently from this scale.
The prize is awarded every three years. The competition took place in 2008, 2011, 2014 and most recently in 2017. With the award of the Fritz Höger Prize 2014 on September 19 at the DAZ ( German Architecture Center ), a new pricing system was introduced. For the first time, a Grand Prix, the Fritz Höger Prize in gold and silver as well as the Special Mention and Nominee awards were presented.
participation
Eligible to participate are architects, architectural associations and architect / engineering associations who are intellectual authors of the structures submitted. Participation in the competition is free. There are also no costs for the participants for the publication of the nominated and award-winning submissions in the magazine “ VORTEILE - Das Backstein-Magazin” as well as for the presentation as part of the traveling exhibition. A newcomer award was presented for the first time as part of the Fritz Höger Prize 2014. This is aimed at students, graduates and young architects who graduated no more than four years ago.

The expert jury is appointed by the “Brick Building Initiative” and is made up of architects, journalists and representatives of the German brick industry. The jury's advice is closed to the public.

Traveling exhibition
The nationwide traveling exhibition for the Fritz Höger Prize documents the winning projects as well as all submissions nominated for the architecture prize. In 2011 it showed 56 nominated projects on 50 large-format information boards. The touring exhibition was last shown in June 2013 at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt . The traveling exhibition is available to universities free of charge.
ADVANTAGES - The brick magazine
Twice a year, “Vorteil - das Backstein-Magazin” (spelling: ADVANTAGES) presents the projects that have been nominated for the architecture prize. It appears as a 52-page supplement in selected German architecture trade magazines and can be ordered free of charge from the “Building with Bricks Initiative” or viewed on the website.
The last issue of the magazine to date was published in early 2020 and was dedicated to the objects nominated for the Fritz Höger Prize 2017 in the “Public Buildings” category.
Convention of Building Culture K-2012
The Fritz Höger Prize 2011 is one of the Baukultur prizes officially represented in the Baukultur Convention K-2012. The convention, organized by the Federal Foundation for Building Culture , took place on June 17 and 18, 2012 in Hamburg and was dedicated to the focus on traffic building culture . The Fritz Höger Prize 2011 was represented by the participants:
- Hanns-Martin Römisch, architect in the main church building department of the Archbishop's Ordinariate in Munich and specialist builder of the Dominikuszentrum Munich-Nordhaide on behalf of the Catholic Church Foundation St. Gertrudes.
