The University of Applied Sciences Erfurt is one of three universities in the Thuringian state capital Erfurt . Founded in October 1991, it had 4,101 students in the 2019/2020 winter semester.

history

The Royal Building Trade School around 1910

In 1901, a royal Prussian building trade school in Erfurt was founded in Schlüterstrasse. The engineering school for construction emerged from it in 1947. In 1946 an engineering school for horticulture was founded and in 1955 an engineering school for supply engineering. On October 1, 1991, these institutes with the newly formed departments of landscape architecture and social affairs formed the basis for the foundation of the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences.

On October 15, 1992 the new Faculty of Economics (today: Economics) was opened. At the beginning of the winter semester 1994/95, the additional study of industrial engineering started in the new department of traffic and transport. In the same year the restoration department (today: conservation and restoration) was added. Both are real innovations at the universities of applied sciences in the new federal states.

This offer is supplemented by the interdisciplinary bachelor's degree in Applied Computer Science, which opened in 2000 and which also began with the Master’s degree in 2004. At the beginning of the 2007/08 winter semester, the bachelor's degree in Forestry and Ecosystem Management started, which continued the offer of the Schwarzburg Forestry University (closed in 2008) in a new form. This course of study was taken up in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture, which has since been called Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Forestry. The part-time bachelor's degree in education and upbringing of children, which is part of the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences, also started in 2007/08.

In 2008, the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences adopted a new basic order. The structure of the university has also changed: the merger of earlier departments created 6 faculties. These are:

  • Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning
  • Faculty of Civil Engineering and Conservation / Restoration
  • Faculty of Building Technology and Computer Science
  • Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Forestry
  • Faculty of Applied Social Sciences
  • Faculty of Business, Logistics and Transport

The faculties are now the basic organizational units of the university. They combine subject-related or cooperating courses of study.

offer

The economics department was added to the founding departments of architecture , civil engineering , horticulture , landscape architecture , social affairs and supply engineering in 1992 . Real innovations in the range of universities of applied sciences in the new federal states are the fields of conservation and restoration as well as traffic and transport . This is supplemented by the interdisciplinary course in Applied Computer Science , which opened in 2000, with specializations in media , engineering and business informatics . Since the 2007/08 winter semester, the forestry and ecosystem management course has been completing the traditional “green” training in horticulture and landscape architecture in Erfurt. The degree course in education and upbringing of children was initially set up in the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences on a part-time basis and will be taught undergraduate from the 2012 summer semester. For the 2008/2009 winter semester, the offer was expanded to include the courses in urban and spatial planning and railway engineering .

structure

Main entrance on the Altonaer Strasse campus
Teaching building on the Leipziger Strasse campus
Teaching building at Schlueterstrasse
Steinplatz high-rise (formerly FHE), today the Max Weber College of the University of Erfurt

The University of Applied Sciences Erfurt offers bachelor's and master's degrees in thirteen disciplines, which are organized into six faculties:

Faculty of Applied Social Sciences

Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning

Faculty of Civil Engineering and Conservation / Restoration

Faculty of Building Technology and Computer Science

Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Forestry

Faculty of Business, Logistics and Transport

Locations

The six faculties are spread over three locations in the city:

Altonaer Strasse

The structural heart of the building is the campus on Altonaer Straße. This is where the applied social sciences, conservation and restoration, traffic and transport, applied computer science, economics, building and energy technology and civil engineering are at home. In addition, the main auditorium, which was completed in 2008, is located here, the laboratory building, the research institutes, the university computer center, the university library and the central administration. The central cafeteria, the language laboratories and the student council are also located there.

Leipziger Street

The domicile of the "green" area of landscape architecture, horticulture and forestry is in the northeast of the city, on Leipziger Strasse. A large experimental greenhouse and extensive open spaces, a large arboretum and a modern landscape educational park offer practical references.

Schlueterstrasse

The architecture and urban planning faculty is located in the building on Schlüterstraße. This continues the over 100-year-old tradition of the Royal Prussian building trade school to this day. Since 2008 (winter semester 08/09), in addition to the architecture course, the urban and spatial planning course has also been based.

The economics department was also housed in a converted high-rise building on Steinplatz . The campus on Altonaer Straße was also used. In the summer semester of 2017, the subject moved to the Altonaer Straße campus.

research

Since the university was founded, there has been cooperation with a wide variety of companies and institutions in the region, as well as with municipal institutions.

The focus of research at the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences is on application-oriented research and services, on the link between theory and practice. The aim is to provide research and development potential, especially for small and medium-sized companies in the region, which they cannot manage on their own.

The following research priorities were defined in 2013:

  • Innovative transport systems and efficient logistics solutions
  • Childhood, youth, social conflicts
  • Sustainable planning and building, land use and resource management

These focal points are intended to support the university's profile and differentiate the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences from the competition.

International

The University of Applied Sciences Erfurt has a broad network of around 70 partner universities worldwide. This enables both German students to study abroad and foreign students to deepen their knowledge in Erfurt.

Since 2005, the economics department of the Business-Logistics-Transport Faculty has been organizing an annual two-week international summer school on changing topics from current economic topics.
