The Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences is based in Schmalkalden in Thuringia and was founded in its current form in 1991. It is therefore one of the younger German universities . Its international name is Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences . It has five faculties and offers 16 Bachelor's and 8 Master's courses (dual and full-time) as well as 12 part-time courses. Research and teaching are strongly influenced by MINT (= mathematics, computer science, natural science and technology) .

history

In 1893, the Schmalkalder District Administrator Hagen submitted the proposal to the Prussian Minister for Trade and Industry to set up a similar college in Schmalkalden based on the model of the existing technical school in Remscheid. In 1902 the “Royal College for Small Iron and Steel Goods Industry Schmalkalden” was founded in Schmalkalden , which formed the roots of today's university until its end in 1918.

From 1919 to 1949 the Royal Technical School continued its work as a state technical school for small iron and steel goods industry , whereby the specialization remained.

From 1950 the technical school became the engineering school for mechanical engineering in Schmalkalden until 1990 . The students came from all parts of the GDR from the Baltic Sea to Lusatia. In approx. 45 years with the end of their training at the "Engineering School Schmalkalden" in 1995, over 10,000 people obtained an engineering degree.

The Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences as it exists today was founded on October 1st, 1991. Priority was given to the structural development and the new equipment of the technical college. After completing the three-year construction period, the first coherent new campus building in Thuringia was completed in November 2000. During this construction period, a lecture hall building with an auditorium, two additional lecture halls, several seminar rooms and institute buildings with their own laboratories, a library and 160 PC workstations were built.

With the structural development, the range of courses has also expanded. Mechanical engineering remained one of the pillars in the training profile of the university. In addition, in the first two years after it was founded, the electrical engineering and computer science departments began teaching with courses of the same name. In addition, there were other courses of study such as business informatics, business administration and economics. The latter belong to another new subject area, economics. The Multimedia Marketing course, which started teaching in the 2008/2009 winter semester and is still only offered at the Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences, stands out particularly in the Computer Science Faculty.

The University of Applied Sciences got a new name from October 1, 2015: Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences . This name change came about as a result of changes in the university landscape in Germany. With the change, new bachelor and master courses were added such as B. Health Tech, Mobile Computing, Applied Computer Science, and Mechatronic & Robotics. The new Bachelor's degree in Business Psychology will start at the Faculty of Business and Economics in the 2020/21 winter semester
