history

The first plans for a university in Northern Thuringia were made back in 1991 and took on more concrete features from 1993 onwards. In addition to Nordhausen, other locations were being discussed at this time, such as Mühlhausen . The aim of such a university was, among other things, to strengthen the region in relation to the Thuringian city chain . The plans for a university of applied sciences in Northern Thuringia then led to the foundation of the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences in 1997. However, the area of the vineyard has a history dating back to 1906 with various educational institutions. At that time, the decision of the Saxon Provincial Parliament was made to build a state educational institution, which opened in 1910 and was partially destroyed in the bombing of Nordhausen in April 1945. In 1951 the school "Technical College for Agriculture", 1956-1994 then also called "Engineering School for Agricultural Engineering", was founded on the site.

Founded in 1997 by the Thuringian State Parliament, the university began its studies in 1998.

  • Study Service Center

Education

The range of courses includes ten bachelor's degree programs and five master’s degree programs in the two fields of engineering and economics and social sciences. In addition to the classic subjects, the University of Applied Sciences also offers a dual course of study (NOKOMO - Nordhäuser KombiModell). A professional and university degree is possible within four years. A bachelor's degree in business administration is combined with commercial apprenticeships.

With the August Kramer Institute (AKI) , Nordhausen University has had an engineering teaching and research facility since the beginning of 2006. The fields of work are divided into the three main areas of energy systems, materials and process engineering and geoengineering.

The in.RET - Institute for Regenerative Energy Technology aims to support companies and institutions with advice, energy research and further training. It organizes the bachelor's degree courses in regenerative energy technology and industrial engineering for sustainable technologies as well as the energy-related profiling directions within the master's degree in systems engineering.

The Institute for Computer Science, Automation and Electronics (IAE) is still under construction . As a teaching and research institute, it covers the areas of computer science, web technology, automation technology and electronics at HS Nordhausen.

The Institute for Public Management and Governance (IPMG) is a scientific institution of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences at Nordhausen University. The IPMG advises regional authorities and their public companies across the federal states with regard to the design and maintenance of their public tasks. The work of the institute concentrates on the bundling of qualifications in the fields of law, economics and social sciences in order to develop options for action in municipal control problems and to achieve solutions. In the fields of “Modern Regulation”, “Organization and Personnel” and “Accounting and Controlling”, models, sustainability or demographic strategies, marketing strategies and funding concepts for municipalities are developed.

The Institute for Social Medicine, Rehabilitation Sciences and Health Services Research (ISRV) at the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences has also been in existence since January 22, 2013 . The focus here is on research in the areas of rehabilitative, therapeutic social work, curative education, transdisciplinary early intervention, systemic counseling and therapy.

The sensory laboratory deals with the field of sensory product research. The relationship between product components and the sensory impressions is focused here.

In 2019, the campus was expanded to include a first external location, as research on a technical scale exhausted the space available at the vineyard. The newly founded Thuringian Innovation Center for Recyclable Materials (ThIWert) serves in particular for research and development in the field of recyclable materials and recycling management and also sees itself as a network between industry, municipalities and practice-oriented research and teaching. The three main research areas of ThIWert are: gypsum and gypsum substitutes / building material recycling, bioresource management and recycling (waste electrical equipment, batteries and plastics).

Spin-offs

Spin-offs from research institutions are part of the desired strategy to increase knowledge-based start-up ideas. As a rule, employees of the facilities and, if necessary, the institutes themselves participate in such spin-offs.

So far there have been 13 start-ups at the FH Nordhausen.

Examples:

  • In 2009 the EKP Energie-Klima-Plan GmbH was founded, which formulates recommendations for action and concrete projects for energy-efficient urban renewal on the basis of model spaces.
  • BinaryGuys.de GmbH, founded in June 2011, develops and produces gadgets and technical toys for the European market.
  • In 2013, InnoLife was founded, a research and innovation institute for processing and realigning social structures and norms that have become critical.

Events on campus

Since 2001, the campus festival has been held every summer on the grounds of HS Nordhausen, organized by the Karzer student club . The program includes sports tournaments, demonstrations and live music on several stages and in different musical styles. The size of the campus festival is between 2000 and 3000 visitors.

The " Long Night of Science " is intended to convey scientific topics and information in an entertaining way, which is happening in freely accessible lectures, demonstrations and workshops. The first “Long Night of Science” took place on October 11, 2006. Events in 2007, 2009 and 2011 followed, each attracting between 2500 and 5000 visitors.

The Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences opens its doors to the University Information Day (HIT) - open day and enables interested young people to gain insight into the range of courses at the university. A broad program is offered on this day. For those who decide late, another university information day - the "Small University Information Day" - takes place every year in August.
