Student club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Student clubs (including student clubs or rarely student clubs ) are voluntary student associations . They offer a program between a pub, cultural events, disco and parties. They are run by students and, as socio-cultural centers, are usually funded by the locally responsible student union . In general, the motto “by students - for students” applies. In addition to a location close to the university, this is primarily reflected in the favorable price level. They are generally open to all students and non-students.

Most student clubs are located directly in dormitories , but also in cafeterias or directly in university buildings.

Today, student clubs can be found predominantly in the new federal states . Many of them were founded in GDR times. The oldest among them have been around for over 50 years.

Dresden is considered the “capital of student clubs” . In the 1990s there were over 20 student clubs here; today there are 14. At the university locations of Tharandt , Zittau and Görlitz , which are also part of the Dresden Student Union , there are three more clubs.

history

The first initiatives to found student clubs took place in the university towns of the GDR in the 1950s. Many of the clubs that still exist today date back to their heyday in the 1970s. Like the universities , the dormitories were also divided into sections at that time , which also led to a separation according to subject areas within the student clubs. This is often reflected in the names of individual student clubs to this day. At that time, the student clubs, like student “initiatives”, were assigned to the Free German Youth (FDJ) .

After the reunification , the role of the FDJ ceased and the student clubs were converted into independent associations. In some cities, all clubs together also formed a registered association . Since the student dormitories are now subordinate to the student unions, these landlords are for the dormitory clubs and, in terms of their social and cultural mission, also supporters and promoters of the cultural sector.

Due to the increased competition from commercial pubs, discos and clubs, the situation of many clubs has worsened in recent years. Declining public support and the falling interest in voluntary work have also meant the end for many student clubs.
