Martin Richter has been the managing director since January 2010.

history

On December 4, 1919, the Hochschul-Wirtschaftsgenossenschaft eGmbH was founded by students and university teachers to improve the economic situation of students after the First World War . This cooperative emerged from the university purchasing and consumer cooperative founded on October 26, 1919 in the auditorium of the TH Dresden, and was the first of its kind in Germany.

In the late 1920s, the Dresden Student Union and the German Student Union emerged from the self-help facility. Both were during the DC circuit in 1933 in the Empire Student forced integrated and dissolved in larger parts.

After the Second World War , efforts were made to re-establish the Dresden Student Union, which initially remained unsuccessful. Up until German reunification , the social tasks were carried out by the universities themselves. The re-establishment of the Dresden Student Union, as an institution under public law, took place on July 1, 1991. The legal basis was initially the Saxon Student Union Act, and from 1999 the Saxon University Act . Today's basis is part 10 of the Saxon Higher Education Act of December 10, 2008.

tasks

The task of the Studentenwerk is to provide social, economic, health and cultural support and support for the students, in particular through the operation of student dormitories and catering facilities. Within the scope of its financial capacity, it takes into account the special needs of students with children, disabled students and foreign students and promotes the compatibility of study and family. He is also responsible for state funding for training. With the approval of the State Ministry for Science and Art, it can take on other tasks, such as the canteen supply for state employees and students as well as the operation of day-care centers for the universities, provided this is economically expedient and the financing is secured. ( § 109 SächsHSFG)

The Studentenwerk provides inexpensive student catering in a total of 10 production canteens , 6 serving canteens and 4 independent cafeterias, including the old cafeteria, which it claims to be the oldest cafeteria in Germany. Over two million meals are distributed annually. It provides housing for students and especially freshmen. The Studentenwerk operates 41 dormitories with 6,697 places (as of 2016), of which (as of 2017) 29 houses in Dresden, three in Tharandt , seven in Zittau and one in Görlitz. Most of the rooms in the dormitories are furnished. For short-term stays in Dresden, the Studentenwerk provides accommodation in the international guest house. The guest house at Hochschulstrasse 50 was completely renovated in 2006 and now offers a total of 310 rooms for guests of Dresden universities or for friends and relatives of students.

Other fields of activity of the Dresden Student Union include advice on issues relating to student financing , the processing of BAföG applications and the processing of applications for relocation allowance from the City of Dresden. The Studentenwerk offers free social services for students, such as B. Legal advice and psychosocial advice. It also offers support for students with disabilities, for students from abroad or students in need. In addition, the Studentenwerk operates two day-care centers with 250 places and, since 2007, in partnership with the TU Dresden, the campus office “Uni mit Kind”.

The promotion of student culture is another area of work. One focus is on looking after the student clubs in Dresden, Tharandt, Zittau and Görlitz. The Studentenwerk also runs a student gallery, rents rooms to bands and artists, and offers an extensive program of artistic and study-promoting courses every semester.

A total of 590 employees (as of 2016, for comparison (2007): 488 employees, 211 of them part-time) generate an annual turnover of over 30 million euros . In addition to these own sales, the company finances its services primarily from student contributions - the so-called student union contribution (summer semester 2017: € 77.50), which is collected by the universities as part of the semester contribution - and from grants from the state of Saxony. The state of Saxony has, however, reduced these grants more and more in recent years, which has consequently led to increasing student contributions. These increases in the student union fee caused some displeasure among the students concerned, but were always also borne by the student members of the Dresden student union's administrative board.
