Georg Jensen

Georg Arthur Jensen (born August 31, 1866 in Raadvad, near Copenhagen , † September 2, 1935 ibid) was a Danish silversmith and artist whose functional style silversmiths helped shape the industrial design of the Scandinavian countries. He was also the founder of the renowned silver company Georg Jensen Sølvsmedie .

life and work

During the years 1895-1901 Georg Jensen completed his studies as a sculptor at the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen and then worked in the studio of the Danish court jeweler Michelsen, where he made pewter and silver work in the workshop of Mogens Ballin . In 1904 he opened his own studio in Copenhagen, where he initially produced art nouveau works. His company Georg Jensen soon emerged from this studio and in 1924 he opened a branch on Fifth Avenue in New York City .

After Jensen's death in 1935, his son Jørgen Jensen (1885–1966) took over management of the company. He kept the company's basic attitude of selling high-quality silver work by other designers . These designers included a. Sigvard Bernadotte , Arne Jacobsen , Finn Juhl , Henning Koppel and Erik Magnussen . During the 1960s and 1970s, the company produced high-quality, sculptural jewelry and wristwatches by designers Nanna Ditzel and Vivianna Bülow-Hübe .

In 1973 the Georg Jensen trademark was bought by Royal Copenhagen and in 1997 Georg Jensen Sølvsmedie became part of the Royal Scandinavian Group with the Danish and Swedish companies Royal Copenhagen, Bing & Grøndal, Holmegaard, Orrefors, Kosta Boda and Höganäs Keramik .
