The University of Applied Sciences Dresden - University of Applied Sciences ( HTW Dresden for short ) is a university of applied sciences and, next to the Technical University, the second largest university in the city of Dresden ( Saxony ). It offers 36 courses from five areas (technology, design, economics, environment) and eight faculties (civil engineering, electrical engineering. Geoinformation, design, computer science / mathematics, agriculture / environment / chemistry, mechanical engineering, economics).

The HTW Dresden was founded on July 16, 1992 on the basis of the "Friedrich List" University of Transportation and was initially divided into 6 departments with a total of 15 courses. In the following year, the university was expanded to include the Agriculture / Land Care Department (today: Agriculture / Environment / Chemistry) and the Design Department. The latter was renamed the Faculty of Design as part of the implementation of new study programs in 2018. In the same year the language center and the university sports area were set up and the university library opened.

As a founding member, HTW Dresden has been one of the five universities in the nationwide union HochschulAllianz für Angewandte Wissenschaft (HAWtech) since 2009 . Together with the TU Dresden and other non-university research institutions in Dresden, the HTW Dresden is an (associated) member of the DRESDEN-concept science association .

In 2011 the slogan “Achieve more in practice” became the motto of the HTW Dresden and the Förderverein HTW Dresden e. V. founded.

location

HTW Dresden currently has two main locations: the Friedrich-List-Platz campus near Dresden's main train station and the Pillnitz campus in the Dresden district of the same name, where parts of the Agriculture / Environment / Chemistry faculty are located. There is a library on site at both locations.

A new teaching and laboratory building for 45 million euros is to be built next to the campus from 2019 to 2023.

organization

The organization of the HTW Dresden consists of faculties, central institutions and elected bodies.

Rectorate

The rectorate of the HTW Dresden represents the university externally and is responsible for the management of the scientific work. Katrin Salchert is currently the rector, Anne-Katrin Haubold is the vice-rector for teaching and studies, Gunther Göbel is the vice-rector for research and development and Monika Niehues is the chancellor.

The rector heads the university, executes the resolutions of the central bodies according to § 80 SächsHSFG and maintains order in the university. So far, the following rectors have held office at the HTW Dresden:

Central services

Library

The university library of the HTW Dresden serves as a scientific library primarily for study, teaching and research at the HTW Dresden. However, it is also available to all Saxon citizens for professional and general training. In addition to the central library on the Friedrich-List-Platz campus, there is a branch library in Dresden-Pillnitz for the Faculty of Agriculture / Environment / Chemistry. The media offer is mainly characterized by the subject areas that are taught at the HTW Dresden.

Data center

As a central facility of the HTW Dresden, the university computer center is responsible for the university's IT communication infrastructure and operates the central servers and services. As a service provider, the computer center also offers the faculties and facilities of the HTW Dresden other services, e.g. support in the procurement of data processing systems.

Sports

The university sport of the HTW Dresden offers an offer under the motto "Study together - do sport together". Various courses are offered for students in the sports of gymnastics, fitness, ball, strength, combat, cycling, water and fun sports.

Career Service

The Career Service offers students further offers in the so-called key qualifications, advice & coaching in situations of upheaval and within the application process as well as different formats for the search for internships, theses and entry-level positions.

Center for Interdisciplinary Education (ZfB)

The employees take care of the interdisciplinary education of the HTW students in order to ensure their employability over the long term. This is done by training students in courses offered by the key qualifications area and through the language center. The center is assigned to the Faculty of Economics.

Center for Applied Research and Technology (ZAFT)

The Center for Applied Research and Technology e. V. (ZAFT) supports research activities in close cooperation with the HTW Dresden, especially in interdisciplinary and cross-faculty projects. It was founded on February 1, 1998 to promote research and development and to involve students and partners from research and industry.

Research Institute for Intelligent Technical Systems (FITS)

The Research Institute for Intelligent Technical Systems (FITS) is a scientific institution in the Faculty of Computer Science / Mathematics. The qualification of young scientists within the framework of research and doctoral projects is a central concern. The research institute also ensures a sustainable research infrastructure at the faculty.

Center for medium-sized companies (ZfM)

The Center for Medium-Sized Enterprises (ZfM) is an association of professors and scientists from the Faculty of Business and Economics as well as external specialists to support the performance of medium-sized companies in Saxony. The focus on medium-sized companies at HTW Dresden is further emphasized by a professorship for the management of medium-sized companies, a mentoring program for students and an annual medium-sized company day.

The HTW Dresden offers with the founding forge as a partner of the start-up initiative dresden | exists comprehensive services in the field of business start-ups. In addition to various qualification measures, those interested in starting a business and young founders are supported by advice, coaching and the provision of infrastructure and offices.

Student body

The student body is a part corporation with the right of self-administration with the organ StuRa ( Studentinnen- and Student ) as the State University Act provides. The StuRa sees itself as the central point of contact for all student matters. Since the end of 2019, the division into student councils has been dispensed with. At the end of 2019, the student councils, as a sub-body of the respective student councils, were completely abolished.

The student body has been a member of the fzs since 2013 .

International

Partner universities

HTW Dresden cooperates with approx. 145 universities worldwide within the framework of university agreements or within the framework of the EU program Erasmus +. These diverse contacts form the basis for scientific cooperation in teaching and research as well as for the exchange of students and university professors.

Double degree program

Double degree programs enable students to acquire a degree at the HTW Dresden and at the corresponding partner university at the same time without extending the specified period of study. In this way, the course can be upgraded with integrated courses and get to know other linguistic, cultural and university environments. A diploma, bachelor's or master's degree is acquired at the HTW Dresden as well as the equivalent degree from the corresponding home university.

Faranto

The faranto  eV has been a student initiative for intercultural understanding at the HTW Dresden since 2003. As a section of the Erasmus Student Network , she supports a. international exchange and looks after foreign students in addition to the international office of the university.

Regular events

Traditionally, the HTW Dresden holds an information day on study orientation on the second Thursday in January and on a Saturday in April.

One of the highlights of the year is the Long Night of Science , which gives everyone interested a glimpse into the scientific landscape.

As at many other universities, the HTW Dresden hosts a Dies Academicus every year.

In addition, a research day takes place once a year, which was first held in 2010.

In addition, the StuRa of the HTW Dresden holds an introductory event for all new students at the beginning of the academic year. The event is intended to make it easier for students to start their studies, but also to enable them to get to know other freshmen or already active students.

Faculty of Civil Engineering

The Saxon Radon Day has been held annually at the Faculty of Civil Engineering since 2007, at which topics of radon-safe construction and renovation are discussed.

Faculty of Electrical Engineering

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering regularly offers scientific seminars to stimulate communication between students, scientists and experts from industry.

Faculty of Geoinformation

The Faculty of Geoinformation is organizing a winter lecture series together with the DVW Saxony, in which geo-informatic topics are discussed.

Faculty of Design

At the end of each semester, the design faculty has a public presentation of the semester theses followed by a two-day exhibition.

Faculty of Computer Science / Mathematics

The Faculty of Computer Science / Mathematics offers a database round table once a month.

Faculty of Agriculture / Environment / Chemistry

The Faculty of Agriculture / Environment / Chemistry forms the Green Forum Pillnitz with the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology, the Julius Kühn Institute and the state enterprise "Palaces, Castles and Gardens of Saxony". In this context, joint presentations of research results, training and teaching as well as joint events take place.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has organized the Dresden Commercial Vehicle Day every year since 2011 to inspire students and other interested parties to learn about commercial vehicle technology, which is offered as part of the vehicle technology course.

Faculty of Economics

The SME Day, which takes place annually in April at the Faculty of Business and Economics, deals with current business issues as part of a practical specialist conference. Company representatives, heads and employees of associations as well as university lecturers present and discuss current information on selected SME topics.
