Silicon Saxony ( engl. " Silicon - Saxony ") is a registered charity based in Dresden . It sees itself as a network or industry association of the Saxon microelectronics , semiconductor , photovoltaic and software industries , which is particularly located in the Dresden / Freiberg / Chemnitz area. With around 350 member companies employing around 40,000 people, the association calls itself the largest high-tech network in Saxony and one of the largest microelectronics and IT clusters in Germany and Europe. Members of the association are not only companies, but also research institutes, universities and colleges.
history
With the aim of strengthening the economic region of Saxony as a location for microelectronics nationally and internationally, the association sees itself as a communication and cooperation platform for its members. Externally, the association makes a significant contribution to active location marketing and the networking of European microelectronics locations.
The foundation stone for today's Silicon Saxony goes back to the development of EDP technology in GDR times in Saxony. The first Robotron 300 mainframe computer was developed and built in what was then Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz ) , which heralded the age of PC technology in the GDR.
The term Silicon Saxony had already established itself in the tabloid media and popularly well before the association was founded in 2000, based on the Californian Silicon Valley , the most famous semiconductor and computer location in the world. The term can mean both the industry association and the region in Saxony itself.
In 2008 the project Cool Silicon - Energy Efficiency Innovations from Silicon Saxony was selected by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as one of five German top clusters. The financial volume of the Cool Silicon Cluster is around 140 million euros for the period from 2009 to 2013. The project coordinator is Thomas Mikolajick .
