Munich is an important IT and high-tech location

Isar Valley is an unofficial name for Munich and its surroundings as an IT , microelectronics and high-tech location. The name is based on the Silicon Valley in California , the most important location of the IT industry worldwide. The greater Munich area is one of the most important locations for this sector in Germany. At the end of 2010 there were over 29,000 companies in the IT sector with a total of over 230,000 employees. According to the Technical University of Munichthe region is even the most important IT location in Germany. A study by the EU Commission in 2014 saw the Munich area as the leading IT location in Europe.

The Siemens Aktiengesellschaft, since 1949, based in Munich, already rose in the 1950s in the computer and semiconductor industry one, so at that time was about Siemens in 2002 developed. In 1962 the Leibniz computer center was founded in Munich and in 1971 the later important (now defunct) company Softlab . Since the 1990s in particular, however, the region has developed more and more into a globally important location for the IT industry as part of the Bavarian high-tech offensive , benefiting from numerous funding programs and settlement campaigns under Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber . In addition, the Munich area has three large universities and colleges with the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich , the Technical University of Munich and the University of Applied Sciences Munich and a correspondingly high number of qualified graduates. The development was also favored by the proximity to numerous large corporations. So companies like Infineon or Gigaset emerged as spin-offs from Siemens. Also, Fujitsu Technology Solutions went from the former joint venture Fujitsu Siemens Computers forth.

A study from 2001 saw the "Isar Valley" as the fourth most important IT location worldwide, after Silicon Valley , the greater Boston area and on a par with Tel Aviv ( Silicon Wadi ). Since then, Munich has retained its status as one of the leading IT locations worldwide. With the SuperMUC , the most powerful supercomputer in Europe was also located in Munich in 2012.
