The Legnica Railway Station is the main passenger station of the Lower Silesian city of Legnica (Liegnitz) in Poland . The station is on the main Wrocław Muchobór – Gubinek line, which was once part of the Berlin – Wrocław line . It links the main line with the railway lines to Katowice , Jerzmanice-Zdrój (Bad Hermsdorf an der Katzbach) and Gwizdanów (Queissen) .

The station was opened in 1844. The current station building with the platform hall was built in the 1920s. After the Second World War, Liegnitz became Polish. Today the station is a railway junction in Polish local and long-distance traffic in the middle of Lower Silesia. Cross-border trains to Germany also run via Legnica.

location

The station is located north of the city center at the junction of Ulica Dworcowa and Ulica Kolejowa, which border the forecourt in front of the reception building. The former freight yard is located on the short Ulica Kolejowa east of the reception building. The railway lines cross the city in an east-west direction. To the east, the tracks cross Ulica Stacyjna, Kaczawa (Katzbach) and then pass the storage group in the south and the depot in the north.

The western exit of the station leads via Ulica Brama Głogowska at Post Office 1, Ulica Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie and then separates into the railway lines in the direction of Złotoryja (Goldberg i. Silesia) , Miłkowice (Arnsdorf (b Liegnitz)) and Lubin (Lüben) .

history

The Lower Silesian-Märkische Eisenbahngesellschaft (NME) was founded in the early 1840s. The company's task was to build a railway line from the Prussian state capital Berlin to the Silesian provincial capital, Breslau . The construction of the line was divided into several construction phases. The construction work in the Liegnitz – Breslau section began after the license was granted on November 27, 1843. The construction section was finally opened on October 19, 1844 after a two-week test drive. The rail traffic on the westward section via Haynau to Bunzlau could be started on October 1, 1845. On September 1, 1846, the entire route could be used for the first time. Another 10 years later, the Breslau-Schweidnitz-Freiburg Railway Company was able to open the Striegau – Jauer – Liegnitz line. Finally, on October 1, 1871, the opening of the railway line from Liegnitz via Parschwitz, Steinau (Oder) , Raudten and Queissen to Glogau .

In 1875 the new section Arnsdorf – Modlau – Sagan on the Berlin – Wroclaw line was opened, thus shortening the train journey in the direction of Berlin. Nine years later, on October 15th, the Liegnitz – Goldberg railway was inaugurated .

The first station building was built in 1844 about 200 meters west of the current one. The design came from J. Manger. The central building with the two towers has been preserved. It is located on Ulica Dworcowa opposite the bus station on the exit tracks towards the west. The second station building was moved further east and built on an island. The new station was officially opened on May 10, 1880. The station building was connected to the city by a tunnel that ran under the tracks. After a while it became apparent that the new building was too small for the growing traffic. As a first step, a freight bypass from Arnsdorf in the west to the north around Liegnitz was designed. Construction began in 1914, but continued until after the First World War . The freight bypass joins the main line about 1.5 kilometers east of the station and was opened to traffic on October 15, 1925. Finally, in the 1920s, the new station building south of the tracks and the platform hall were built.

At the beginning of February 1945 the Red Army took the city. After the end of the Second World War , Lower Silesia was placed under Polish administration. The city received the Polish name Legnica . On August 19, 1945, the Soviet military administration handed over the management of the station to the Polish railroad workers. A memorial plaque at the entrance has been a reminder of this since October 6, 1946.

In the 1980s, several lines in Lower Silesia were electrified. In 1984 the electrification of the railway line between Wroclaw and Legnica began with three kilovolt DC voltage . The route to Węgliniec followed in 1985 , to Rudna Gwizdanów in 1986 and to Złotoryja in 1988 .

The station was modernized and restored in the 2000s.

The current station building was built between 1922 and 1929. Due to the horticultural and commercial exhibition in Liegnitz (GUGALI) , the new train station was opened in June 1927. The ceremonial opening takes place after complete completion on December 7th, 1929. The reception building was built in the expressionist style and this time received a platform hall. The main nave of the hall in the form of a Tudor arch spans the middle tracks, the neighboring aisles each one track. The hall is 46 meters wide and formally based on that of Hamburg Central Station . In a westerly direction, the hall is adjoined by a platform roof that is closed over the entire width.

Platform I is the outer platform on track 1, which is directly north of the station building. To the north follow the post platform between tracks 3 and 4 and platform II with tracks 5 and 6 on the south side of the platform hall. Track 5 only has a platform roof that connects to the steel structure of the platform hall. Track 6 is already under the aisle of the hall. Platform III with tracks 7 and 8 and platform IV with tracks 9 and 10 follow under the main nave. Track 11 is located under the northern aisle on platform V. Like platform 5, the northern half of platform V has only one Platform roofing. The western tunnel below the tracks leads from the station building to platform V and has stairs to all platforms. The second, eastern tunnel only leads from platform I to Ulica Ścinawska.

The station ensemble with the reception building, the platform hall, the expedition building, the station post office and the water tower have been under monument protection since December 28, 1987 (registration number: 635/801 / L).

administration

Liegnitz belonged to the Royal Railway Directorate to Breslau , which later became the Reichsbahndirection Breslau . On April 1, 1899, the machine inspection in Glogau was relocated to Liegnitz. Furthermore, the railway operations offices Liegnitz I and II, the railway machine offices Liegnitz I and II, a railway traffic office and an independent construction department were located in Liegnitz. At the end of the 1920s, the Reichsbahn-Maschinenamt (RMA) Liegnitz was responsible for the railway depot (Bw) Arnsdorf (near Liegnitz), the Bw Liegnitz with the locomotive stations Goldberg, Jauer, Maltsch, Ober Kauffung and Raudten as well as the Bw Sagan and the Bw Sommerfeld. In 1941 the Kohlfurt depot and the Freiwaldau locomotive station also came to the RMA Liegnitz.
