The Kaczawa rises in the Bober-Katzbach Mountains (in the area of ​​the Bleibergkamm) below the Turzec (Schubertberg) mountain near Kaczorów (Ketschdorf) and flows first to the north, later to the northeast through the towns of Wojcieszów (Kauffung), Świerzawa (Schönau), Złotoryja (Goldberg) and Legnica (Liegnitz) and flows into the Oder after 98 km at Prochowice (Parchwitz).

Its main tributaries are the Skorą (Rapid Deichsa) on the left and the Angry Neisse ( Nysa Szalona in Polish ) on the right. The Katzbach has a rapid course, as its gradient is 360 m, but is usually arid in summer. It flows in the area of ​​the former administrative district Liegnitz of the Prussian province (Lower) Silesia .

On August 26, 1813, the Prussian General Field Marshal Blücher and the Prussian Major General Gneisenau and their Silesian army defeated the Napoleonic forces under the leadership of Napoleon's Marshal McDonald in the Battle of the Katzbach .
