The Gliwice Railway Station is one of the largest stations in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region . The station building is a modern building from the 1920s at the end of Ulica Zwycięstwa (the former Wilhelmstrasse).

history

Gleiwitz was connected to the railway network in 1845 with the Opole – Katowice line.

In the 1920s, a new station building was erected southeast of the old station. By relocating to the southeast, the station formed the visual and spatial termination of the former Wilhelmstrasse. After its completion, the old station building was demolished in order to expand the track.

The passenger station was designed by government and building officer Wilhelm Grossart from Opole. The large central hall is 11 meters high. The lobby is also 11 meters high and 370 m². The tracks in the area of the station have been increased by 3.5 meters. This ensured that the underpass was at ground level and you only had to use stairs if you wanted to get to the platforms.

The development of the area around the station, which was already planned in the 1920s, did not come about. This included u. a. the construction of a hotel and another post office, so that the area around the station square remains undeveloped to this day.
