The Zwycięstwa is a main and commercial street in the city of Gliwice (Gleiwitz).

The Zwycięstwa, the former Wilhelmstrasse, runs in a south-west-north-east orientation from the main station to the ring . The approx. 1 kilometer long street is aligned with the street grid of the old town and runs parallel to Dworcowa (Bahnhofstrasse). The turrets and domes of the houses are striking landmarks of Zwycięstwa.

history

The first plans for the construction of Wilhelmstrasse were in the development plan of the city of Gleiwitz from 1876/1877. There was already a path at the site of the later Wilhelmstrasse. For the first time, Wilhelmstrasse was to create a direct connection between the old town and the ring road to the train station. This was already connected by Bahnhofstrasse and Neudorfer Strasse, but this was further east of the train station and the old town. The area north of the old town was already used by the residents for local recreation and agriculture. In addition, there were numerous community gardens in this area until the 1880s, which were first created after the city wall was torn down.

A requirement when building the road was a minimum width of 20 meters.

During its creation, Wilhelmstrasse originally crossed three bodies of water, the Klodnitz Canal and two arms of the Klodnitz . The Klodnitz Canal and a Klodnitz arm (Wiener Bach) were drained at the beginning of the 20th century. In the area of the Klodnitz Canal, east of Wilhelmstrasse, was the port of Gliwice .

A large number of hotels were built on Wilhelmstrasse, including a. the Silesian Court and the House of Upper Silesia .

In 1945 Wilhelmstrasse and Schützenstrasse were renamed ul. Zwycięstwa (Victory Street).
