action

The operetta is set in the fictional island kingdom of "Muckipur" between the front and rear of India at the time of its premiere, i.e. at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Steward Puffetius has heard that Ensign Bhimo has cast an eye on the queen and now intends to secretly serenade her. When he told this news to his master, the king became angry. Bhimo fears bad things and takes flight.

Gustav Steinbock, a mad reporter from distant Berlin, is currently visiting the Kingdom of Muckipur. He has successfully applied for an audience with the king. The king reports all kinds of problems in his marriage: Queen Sita only respects men who have distinguished themselves as heroes. However, he does not fit in such a box, which is why his wife has refused to sleep with him since his marriage. Sita's father only gave his daughter to him because of his wealth.

Gustav Steinbock and Ensign Bhimo meet by chance. In doing so, the two realize that they met a few years ago in Berlin. When the reporter learns that Bhimo is still in secret contact with the queen, he asks him to arrange a meeting with her. His newspaper in Berlin would be delighted if he could include a photograph of the queen in his report on the Kingdom of Muckipur. Bhimo assures the reporter help and leads him to the Minister of Education Jajadewa. Gustav Steinbock likes him right away, which is why he bequeathed him a valuable ring with magical powers that would come to his aid in any danger. There are only two of this kind in the entire kingdom. An audience with the queen does not take place, but the reporter manages to capture her naked while bathing on his film.

Sita's father has heard of the Muckipur Kingdom scandal and demands his daughter back. Despite this, King Muckipur starts a war and goes into battle with his wife's Amazons. He too can finally accomplish a feat. When he comes back home, he is greeted by his people as a shining victor. Now the king wants to take revenge on the reporter from Berlin for his piquant photos. He orders it to be thrown to the tigers to eat. The magic ring now saves the life of Gustav Steinbock. Now it is still granted to him to see his beloved Berlin again. As a farewell, he bequeaths his ring to the queen. Because their husband wears the second ring of this kind and, according to legend, the wearers have the same fate, at the end of the operetta the king and queen become a real couple.

music

After Mrs. Luna , Im Reiche des Indra Paul Linckes is the most successful operetta. What the two works have in common is that they contain hits that have become evergreens and are still often played and heard on the radio today - detached from the stage play. The most well-known are:

  • Even if the years go by ... once upon a time
  • Love comes secretly quietly and quietly
  • See you at five in the morning, sweet mouse, we're sure we won't go home
