The Upper Silesia House was a hotel on Wilhelmstrasse in Gleiwitz . Today the building is the seat of the Gliwice City Council.

history

The history of the establishment of the House of Upper Silesia coincided with the division of Upper Silesia, when Gleiwitz remained in Germany as one of three towns in the Upper Silesian industrial area after the referendum in Upper Silesia in 1921. This moved Gleiwitz into an important position as an industrial location. Many companies moved from East Upper Silesia to the part of the industrial area that had remained German. Due to this circumstance, the construction of a first-class hotel seemed necessary and economically sensible.

The Hotel an der Klodnitz was started in 1924 according to plans by the Wroclaw architect Richard Gaze and, after many difficulties and interruptions, was completed in 1928. A short time later, the fountain with the dancing fauns was set up in front of the hotel .

On the first floor there was a reception hall, a restaurant, a wine bar and the “Café Haus Oberschlesien”. The hotel had 110 guest rooms. In the ballroom there were several wall paintings by the painter Adolf Münzer , including "The Life", "The Work", "The Romance", "The Music" and "The Dance", which was also called "The Schönwalder Hochzeit" because several on it Schoenwalder bridal couples and wedding guests in their Schoenwalder costume dancing in the open air.

In 1945 the hotel was set on fire by the Soviet Army, but was then repaired. After the Second World War, the building served as the seat of the city administration.

The House of Upper Silesia is also mentioned in Horst Bienek's novel “The First Polka” .
