The fauns

The fountain with dancing fauns is a fountain in Gliwice (Gleiwitz). The fountain is one of the city's landmarks. Recently, the fauns like Manneken Pis have been disguised by the city administration on various occasions.

description

The fountain is located on Zwycięstwa Street (the former Wilhelmstraße) on the green area in front of the Gliwice City Council, the former hotel " Haus Oberschlesien ", next to the Klodnitz .

In an octagonal water basin stands a cylindrical pedestal with goat heads as gargoyles at the top , which are connected by festoons made from vines . On the pedestal there are three fauns dancing in a dance. The figures were made in 1928 in the Gleiwitzer Hütte from cast iron based on a template by the Berlin sculptor Hans Dammann .

In Gliwice vernacular it was said that the three fauns on the fountain represented the mayors of Gleiwitz, Hindenburg and Beuthen , who were forever in dispute and who could not agree on the merger of the three cities discussed at the time .

In 2009 the fauns were damaged in an attempted theft and renovated in 2010.

Other well-known fountains in Gliwice / Gleiwitz are the Neptune fountain and the boy with a swan .
