The festoon (French for “ garland ”) is an ornament that is widespread in almost all genres of fine and applied arts , especially in architecture and interior design . An arcade-shaped border for decorating textiles is also known as a festoon .

Characteristic, occurrence

In architecture, wall and decorative painting, as a wallpaper motif , on furniture and goldsmith's work, this purely decorative element usually takes the form of a garland designed as a relief or painted in trompe l'œil style with one or more loosely sagging arches The ends hang down. As a rule, this garland rests on two or more supposedly supporting elements, in ancient times, for example, on the skulls of lions, rams or bulls, in modern times on capitals . Free-hanging festoons are less common.

The garland forming the festoon is made in many motifs, according to which ribbon, flower, blossom, leaf and fruit festoons can be distinguished. Popular leaf motifs are laurel , oak leaves and vine tendrils .

Festons appear in the 4th century BC. In Hellenistic architecture . They are widespread in Roman architecture and wall painting. As an ornament on representative vases or tombs, this element is also used in modern times. In the 18th ( plait style ) and 19th centuries it was part of the ornamental repertoire of representative living space design.

The word feston has also been wrongly used for the wreath of a round picture, the correct name of which is ring garland.

Except for the above, widely used in architectural elements and furniture form the Feston also acts as arcade-shaped border for the decoration of textiles such as table , bed linen and underwear , handkerchiefs , curtains , clothing and so on. These are handcrafted or mechanically manufactured trimmings that are executed in a wide variety of techniques. For example, there are lace , crocheted , knitted and festoon borders embroidered with a festoon stitch.
