Boy with swan
The sculpture Knabe mit Schwan was conceived and modeled in 1834 by the sculptor Theodor Kalide (1801–1863). It is considered one of his earliest works and his first life-size group. For the first time it was executed in cast metal for the palace garden in Charlottenburg and then reproduced in iron, zinc and bronze. According to the invention as a fountain - whereby the swan spits out the water jet - it was integrated in numerous outdoor locations, mostly in gardens and parks or in fountains.
history
On behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. (Prussia) "Boy with Swan" was executed in bronze for the Charlottenburg Palace Gardens. In 1851 the group was presented at the London Great Exhibition and was awarded a bronze medal. Other metal castings found their way to Warsaw, cities in Silesia, Great Britain and the United States. In addition to the numerous contemporary copies, there are later casts (partly as a replacement for damaged copies) and recent reproductions.
