Description and history

View of the fountain in the Kaschte

The sculpture represents Neptune on a dolphin . Neptune is adorned with a crown of seaweed and shells and a trident in his right hand. The fountain figure (fountain) and the base were made from sandstone by Johannes Nitsche from Troppau and erected in 1794. The Neptune sculpture was also called Gabeljürge or Gabeljürgen.

It is located in the middle of a rectangular basin, which was formerly known as a "Kaschte" or tubular box. This basin existed long before the Neptune sculpture was erected. The Röhrkasten in Gleiwitz was supplied with water from the Röhrgraben from Richtersdorf since 1531 .

The Neptune Fountain is a symbol for the connection of Gliwice to the sea through the construction of the Klodnitz Canal .
