As Solarvalley an industrial area in the district is Thalheim the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen in Anhalt-Bitterfeld referred. It is located near the A 9 and Leipzig / Halle Airport .
It should not be confused with the Chinese Solar Valley (中国 太阳谷) of the same name in Dezhou, Shandong.
The production and storage facilities of various companies in the photovoltaic sector are or were on the main street known as Sonnenallee : Hanwha Q-Cells (formerly Q-Cells), Calyxo, Sontor , Solibro , Sovello (formerly EverQ) and CSG Solar . Q-Cells held various stakes in all companies. The companies CSG Solar, Sovello and Sontor have ceased business operations. After a merger, Sontor briefly traded as Sunfilm (2009), but then went bankrupt; under the management of the Wilms Group, operations were resumed as a Sontor and have since been discontinued. Solibro has been part of the Chinese Hanergy Group since 2012 . No investor could be found for CSG Solar and Sovello. Q-Cells produces and sells solar cells and modules based on crystalline silicon wafers; Sovello specialized in solar cells made from wafers using the string-ribbon process. Calyxo, Sontor, Solibro and CSG Solar are or were providers of various thin-film technologies; more precisely CdTe, tandem cells made of microcrystalline and amorphous thin-film silicon, CIGS and the "Crystalline Silicon on Glass" technology developed in Australia with a special circuit diagram. The process gave its name to CSG Solar.
At times over 3000 people were employed in the Solar Valley. Due to the increasing competition from Asia, Q-Cells filed for bankruptcy with the subsidiary Solibro and Sovello in 2012. Solibro has now been transferred to the Chinese energy group Hanergy . Q-Cells was sold to the South Korean group Hanwha . 1300 of the former 1500 jobs are to be retained. No investor was found for Sovello and the formation of a transfer company for the employees failed.
