The Hochschule für Telekommunikation Leipzig (HfTL) is a private , state-recognized university of applied sciences , at which the Science Council has spoken out against accreditation. Deutsche Telekom is responsible for the HfTL . The university is located in the Leipzig district of Connewitz . Due to the expiry of the accreditation, no freshmen have been enrolled since 2018. So far, both direct and dual courses and part-time courses have been offered. The already enrolled students will be able to finish their studies by December 31, 2022.

history

Construction site of the Post and Telecommunications School (1953)
"Rosa Luxemburg" engineering school: GDR postage stamp from 1981

On April 28, 1952, Deutsche Post began building a new school for post and telecommunications based on a design by Kurt Nowotny in Connewitz Gustav-Freytag-Strasse . The school opened on September 11, 1953, and 277 students took the three-year direct course to become postal economists. On January 1, 1954, a five-year long-distance technical college course for the postal and newspaper services began.

On October 13, 1954, the college was named " Rosa Luxemburg ". After the relocation of engineering training for radio and telecommunications from Berlin and Königs Wusterhausen to Leipzig in 1958, the school was given the status of an engineering school and was renamed the "Rosa Luxemburg" engineering school for post and telecommunications . A bust of Luxembourg still stands in front of the school.

As part of the reunification , the engineering school was transferred to the Deutsche Bundespost Telekom by order of the then Federal Minister for Post and Telecommunications. The former rector of the Fachhochschule der Deutsche Bundespost Berlin (FH der DBP Berlin) Uwe Rabenhorst was entrusted with the management of the engineering school on November 15, 1990. He took over the duties of a founding rector for the expansion of the Leipzig engineering school of the Deutsche Bundespost Telekom into the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences of Deutsche Telekom .

Luxembourg bust in front of the university

In 1992, with effect from September 25, 1991, state recognition as a university of applied sciences by the Free State of Saxony was valid for an unlimited period . From now on, graduate engineers (FH) were trained at the technical college . The school was continuously expanded into a modern campus university. With the privatization of the Deutsche Bundespost in 1995, the University of Applied Sciences was transferred to Deutsche Telekom. Since 2000, it has been Telekom's only in-house technical college. In the course of the Bologna process , new, staggered Bachelor and Master courses and corresponding degrees were introduced. In 2007 the University of Applied Sciences was given the new name Hochschule für Telekommunikation Leipzig (HfTL) , which is intended to highlight the core competence in telecommunications . Despite the unlimited valid state recognition, a procedure for institutional accreditation became necessary because the sponsoring company changed.

campus

The campus HfTL located in the southern district of Leipzig Connewitz . The lecture halls, seminar rooms and laboratories are located on campus. There is also a campus bistro and the university's student club. This is known by Leipzig students as the "plug".

Child and career

Since September 2011, a kindergarten and a crèche, which are specially adapted to the needs of the students, have been available near the university. To this end, cooperation agreements were signed with the Leipzig Children's Association. The educational concept of the facility is mathematically and technically oriented.

Culture at the Telecom University

Changing exhibitions took place regularly at the HfTL. The aim is to give artists a platform and create links between art and science.

Sport and wellness

The HfTL is a member of the General German University Sports Association (ADH). This gives students the opportunity to take part in the German University Championships at state level. The HfTL offers football, volleyball, climbing and badminton as sports. In addition, students can take advantage of various sports activities at the neighboring University of Technology, Business and Culture, including Aikido and baseball.

Campus life

Campus life has undergone a number of changes over the past few years. Events are less often organized by the university than much more by the students themselves. Events and student support are carried out by the student council of the HfTL and the university's own student club, Stecker . The latter is run by active and former students of the HfTL as well as occasionally from other universities. The premises of this club are also the birthplace of FHL Verlag. In cooperation with the university sports center of the neighboring HTWK, all university sports are looked after by the HfTL student council. He also advocated the reopening of the fitness room, which was closed for cost reasons.

In addition to the usual activities of a student council, specialist lectures are also organized and some of these are made available online. In cooperation with the connector , the StuRa regularly organizes amusement events for direct, dual and part-time students, so that they not only have a bit of a change from work and study, but can also tell each other about their impressions of the various companies involved and thus make contacts across the group .

Former sister institutions

Until the 1990s, the university had sister universities (engineering or later technical colleges of the Deutsche Bundespost ) in Dieburg ( Dieburg University of Applied Sciences ) and Berlin-Tempelhof , both of which existed as universities of applied sciences before the establishment in Leipzig. They were given up after the privatization of Telekom and incorporated into other (state) universities of applied sciences. In 1996 the Deutsche Telekom University of Applied Sciences in Berlin-Tempelhof was integrated into the Berlin University of Technology and Economics, including all laboratory facilities and professorships. Around 2005 there was again the idea of integrating a Telekom technical college into a public university. However, this was not implemented and the HfTL remained under the sponsorship of Telekom.

closure

In January 2018 it became known that Deutsche Telekom was negotiating with the state of Saxony, as an alternative to the last group-owned university, to create a foundation faculty in the neighboring HTWK . For the foundation faculty to be founded in the first half of 2018, Deutsche Telekom would assume the costs for the endowed professorships and the costs for all resources on a full cost basis. The contract required for this was signed by all parties in November 2018. The faculty will only have 500 students and will forego the previous profile of business informatics. Regardless of the creation of this foundation faculty, Deutsche Telekom does not intend to offer its own university operations from 2020. In the same month, the Prime Minister of Saxony emphasized that the continued existence of the HfTL was financially secured beyond 2020. However, in order to meet the legal entitlement of the remaining students, state recognition was extended for the last time to December 31, 2022 in May 2019.
