The Park Hohenrode is a 10 hectare large park in Nordhausen / Thuringia .

history

The park area was originally a south-sloping field that had been owned and managed by the Kneiff family for the purposes of grain distillery and cattle breeding since the 1830s; it comprised around 25 acres. Oaks and fruit trees once stood on the edges.

The establishment of the park was commissioned by Carl Kneiff (1829–1902) in 1874 . Kneiff had generated the necessary financial means through his company "Kneiff-Tabak". Heinrich Siesmayer , who had become famous for the Frankfurt Palm Garden , was commissioned with the planning . With the death of his father in 1902, Fritz Kneiff , also a member of the German Dendrological Society, inherited the Hohenrode Park. He decided to expand the park and won over Philipp Siesmayer , whose father had planned the first part of the park. The so-called “engagement bridge”, which was built in 1912, enabled both parts to be connected.

In 2009 the Förderverein Park Hohenrode eV acquired the park and the buildings. The community foundation also asked the city of Nordhausen for financial support for the acquisition. The actress Susanne Bormann has been the ambassador of Park Hohenrode since 2012. In May 2013, the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences was won over as a sponsor for the park, with the aim of joint research and the upgrading of the park landscape and the buildings.

Dendrological equipment

The German Dendrological Society counted Carl and Fritz Kneiff among its members. Based on their interest and commitment, an extensive collection of trees was created in the park. This was documented with plant lists, which were later continued and updated.

Buildings in the park

The dominant building is the building known as Villa Kneiff . Ludwig Bohnstedt , who emerged as the winner of the competition for the building of the German Reichstag , was commissioned with the planning in 1874 . The architectural style of the square building is based on the Italian villa architecture of the Renaissance . Despite the expropriation of the tobacco company after the Second World War , the villa remained in private ownership until 2010, and from 1954 to 1990 it was used as a boarding school for the institute (s) for teacher training. The building, which is in great need of restoration, has been reconstructed since 2010 under the direction of the Park Hohenrode Community Foundation and with the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection . Next to the villa is the "coach house", a garden pavilion and other equipment for growing plants (including a greenhouse ).
