Philipp Siesmayer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp Siesmayer (born October 24, 1862 in Frankfurt-Bockenheim ; † May 2, 1935 ) was a German gardener , commercial gardener and garden architect . He was the head of the Siesmayer brothers company , which his father Heinrich Siesmayer had founded in 1842.

Life

Philipp Siesmayer was the sixth of nine children of the Royal Prussian Horticultural Director Heinrich Siesmayer (1817–1900) and his wife Elise Siesmayer, nee. Klees (1837-1872).

He spent his apprenticeship in his father's company, Gebrüder Siesmayer . In the years from 1881 to 1883 he spent his training time in the gardening institute in Wildpark near Potsdam , at that time the most famous teaching institution for aspiring gardeners in Germany.

After completing his training, Philipp Siesmayer returned to Frankfurt and was employed in the family business from then on .

From 1890 he was a partner in the company and from 1892 specialist manager . Parks and gardens that were created by the Siesmayer brothers from 1890 onwards can be assigned to Philipp Siesmayer, as his father was probably no longer able to manage his company at that time. After the death of his father, Philipp Siesmayer initially managed the company alone and from 1901 together with his brothers Ferdinand Siesmayer (1868–1944) and Josef Siesmayer. A division of tasks was planned, i. H. Philipp should take over the creative part, Ferdinand the commercial and Josef should lead the plant cultivation; however, he left the company in 1902. In 1913, on behalf of the city of Bad Homburg, Siesmayer redesigned the Audenwiesen bordering the spa gardens into a park that was given the name "Jubilee Park" due to the 25th anniversary of the German Emperor's reign.

In its heyday, the Siesmayer brothers employed up to 600 people. Due to his success, Philipp Siesmayer was appointed Royal Prussian Horticultural Director and Grand Ducal Hessian Court Garden Engineer. However, the global economic crisis quickly led his company to bankruptcy; it had to file for bankruptcy in 1932 . Philipp Siesmayer was able to work as a professional advisor in Bad Nauheim until his death in 1935 and to plan the spa gardens in Bad Vilbel .

Philipp Siesmayer created numerous smaller and larger parks. In addition, the company maintained the spa parks of Bad Nauheim (1857–1909), Wiesbaden , Bad Homburg (1881–1930), Bad Ems (1888–1922), the entire green areas of Koblenz , many large and approx. 200 smaller private parks in and around Frankfurt am Main . A list of the plants by Philipp Siesmayer contains 174 gardens and parks, some of which are in Romania, Poland, Austria and Belgium. The following comment was added to this list: "Philipp Siesmayer, in whose design office, in addition to the larger systems listed here, thousands of smaller systems and plans were processed, was by far the most busy and successful garden architect in Germany."

family

Philipp Siesmayer was with Emma Mathilde Siesmayer, geb. Plow, married. His son, the garden architect Heinrich Siesmayer (1895–1965) was married to Edith Dannhof (1906–2001), a daughter of the Frankfurt city director Adolf Dannhof and a descendant of Carl August Müller . The couple had no children.
