Engineering informatics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The program engineer computer science (engl. Engineering informatics or computer systems in engineering ) connects interdisciplinary the engineering sciences , such as electrical , civil engineering , machinery , processing technology , system technology with the computer science .

Engineering informatics was offered for the first time in the winter semester 1984/85 at the University of Dortmund with business administration as an additional compulsory minor. Until 1996, this new type of study program only existed twice in Germany.

Sometimes the term technical informatics is also used, whereby this deals with the hardware- technical basics of computing and communication systems and not with their application. Sometimes engineering informatics is equated with computational engineering science . Computational engineering is mainly concerned with computer simulations .

The students in this subject have a wide range of knowledge in the fields of engineering and computer science. They are an 'interface' between computer scientists and engineers and thus close the gap between engineering and the growing demands in information technology.

Education

In the basic course, mathematical and physical basics as well as the basics of electrical engineering or mechanical engineering and computer science are taught to a large extent. In addition, basic subjects from the fields of communication engineering , measurement technology , control engineering , computer science , mathematics offered, etc. to prepare for the main study. The offer for this varies greatly and depends on the university in question. So at universities in the basic course z. In some cases, lectures are offered that only take place in the main course at universities of applied sciences or that represent specializations at universities of applied sciences (e.g. numerical mathematics, signal and system theory, databases, etc.). The basic, core and minor subjects offered also differ greatly from university to university: In some places, for example, electrical engineering is in the foreground, in other places other engineering disciplines.

The establishment of engineering informatics in the interdisciplinary field usually offers the student in the main course more specializations than in other courses. For example:

  • Telecommunications and measurement technology
  • System and automation technology
  • Medical informatics
  • Building informatics
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Numerical simulation
  • Multimedia information and communication systems
  • Integrated hardware and software systems
  • IT components for intelligent systems / cognitive technical systems (neuroinformatics)
  • IT in product development and production technology
  • Mechatronics
  • Software engineering

Professional fields of activity

Just like the specializations, the career prospects of the graduates of the Engineering Informatics course are extremely varied and subject to constant change and constant adaptation to the latest developments.

Possible fields of activity are:
