Act

Gesine Spieß was one of the pioneers of municipal equality policy in Germany. From 1986 she initially worked as a women's representative in Solingen. During her time as the first women's representative of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf, she built the women's office into a strong, publicly recognized and politically effective body (from 1988 to 1994). The first women's advancement plan for Düsseldorf was decided as early as 1989. From 1986 to 1989 she also acted as federal spokeswoman for the federal working group of municipal women's representatives. Another milestone in her work as a women's representative is the founding of the women's fair "TOP" in cooperation with Messe Düsseldorf , at which, for the first time in 1991 and then every two years until 1999, representatives from companies, politics and culture presented, discussed and discussed professional equality issues with great public interest network. As an expert in gender equality policy, Gesine Spieß prepared the report on “Women in Management Positions” for the German Association of Cities in 2000 . From 2014 to 2015, on behalf of the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry for Health, Emancipation, Care and Old Age (MGEPA), she conducted a series of workshops to research the self-image of women's representatives in four federal states and developed concepts for ongoing professionalization and training. The ministry recommended the publication to the members of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament.

From 1994 to 2010 she taught at the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences . Her research and teaching area included childhood , socialization and gender relations / women and gender studies . She also contributed to the development and exchange practice of the university partnership between the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt and the Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi / India. From 1994, Spieß researched and published primarily on women and leadership , and produced comparative studies on gender politics in the GDR and the Federal Republic as well as - after the fall of the Wall - on gender issues and gender-sensitive didactics in university teaching in Eastern Central Europe. Her studies and publications deal, among other things, with the topics of socialization and gender in teaching and didactics. Spieß carried out gender trainings at universities and ministries and developed teaching concepts for gender studies with the universities of Graz and Vienna. Spieß conveyed her research results and practical concepts on gender policy and gender mainstreaming through extensive lectures in Germany and abroad.

In her gender research , Spieß synthesizes symbolic interactionism , deconstructive and constructivist approaches, with recourse to gender history .
