biography

In 1853, Catherina Claus (name of first husband, maiden name unknown) emigrated to the USA with her husband Henry Claus . Four years later, she married Rudolph Lipsius, who joined the company. The brewery was renamed Claus Lipsius Brewery . Six years later, in 1882, her second husband also died - Catherina Lipsius took over sole management of the company again, but was later supported by her son Henry Claus Jr. Together they asserted themselves as local market participants until 1902, but then had to give in to the increased competitive pressure: The Claus Lipsius Brewery was sold to local rivals S. Liebmann's Sons Brewing Company .

Shortly after the takeover, Lipsius sold her house to the future wife of the explorer Frederick Cook and moved with her son Henry Jr. to Prospect Lefferts Gardens , a district of Brooklyn. She died in Sterling in 1918 .

Catherina Lipsius House

In the years 1889–1890, Catherina Lipsius had a mansion built on 670 Bushwick Avenue for $ 25,000 . The architect in charge was Theobald Engelhardt, renowned in Brooklyn . In 1902 the family sold the house to the explorer and doctor Frederick Cook .

On June 18, 2013 the Catherina Lipsius House was placed under a preservation order. The responsible commission of the City of New York justified its choice with the elements characteristic of the Americanized round arch style as well as the residential tower that is striking in the cityscape. The Catherina Lipsius House is a successful combination of medieval and classic, which should be preserved.
