Bushwick is a neighborhood in north Brooklyn in New York City . Bushwick borders Queens to the northeast, Williamsburg to the northwest , Bedford-Stuyvesant to the south, and East New York and Cypress Hills to the southeast . The district represents Community Board 4 of Brooklyn alone and has the following ZIP codes : 11207, 11221 and 11237. Bushwick was once an independent city and has undergone various territorial changes over the course of its history.

Limits

The Bushwick boundaries are often equated with those of the Brooklyn Community Board 4 , which is formed by Broadway to the west, Flushing Avenue to the north, the Borough border with Queens to the east, and the Cemetery of the Evergreens to the south. The industrial area between Flushing Avenue in the south, Bushwick Avenue in the east and Grand Street in the north is also sometimes counted as Bushwick and sometimes referred to as "Industrial Bushwick".

Demographics

The population of Bushwick was 129,980 in 2007. Of these, 38.9% were born abroad. Although this district is home to many different ethnic groups, the population in Bushwick is relatively homogeneous. According to the Furman Center, the Racial Diversity Index is 0.5. In 2007, Bushwick was ranked 35th in a diversity ranking for New York neighborhoods.

Bushwick is a major hub for Hispanic Americans . Most of the residents are Latinos from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic . However, in recent years there has also been an increase in the number of native Americans and other Latin groups, especially immigrants from Mexico . In addition, a large proportion of the population comes from South America. With nearly 80% of the population being Hispanic, residents have created many businesses to maintain their various national traditions and to obtain food and other products. In 2008, the median household income for the neighborhood was $ 28,802. 32% of the population fell below the poverty line, making Bushwick the seventh poorest neighborhood in New York City. Over 75% of children were born into poverty. In 2007, an average of 25 crimes per 1,000 people were committed in the quarter. That put Bushwick 55th on a list of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods in New York City.

The buildings in Bushwick are mostly six-family houses and two- or three-family townhouses. The average age of the buildings is 76 years. More than 91% of all living spaces are within 400 meters of a park and more than 97% are a maximum of 800 meters from an underground station .

The median rent in 2007 was $ 795. One in six apartments is subsidized and one in three rents is regulated. Four percent of tenants live in extremely overcrowded homes. Undeveloped land makes up 4.1% of the area in Bushwick, making it 21st on the list of undeveloped neighborhoods. In 2007, 18.7% of residents were homeowners.

A continuing thriving and growing artist community has existed in Bushwick for decades. There are dozen of studios and galleries throughout the neighborhood, scattered between the JZ , M, and L subway lines , and around Myrtle Avenue. Various projects are intended to enable public access to studios and galleries, and there are also a number of websites dedicated to promoting art in the district and organizing events. Bushwick artists often display their work in private spaces.

The film Bushwick is a 2017 American thriller directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion and written by Nick Damici and Graham Reznick. The film is about a former corpsmen from the US Navy Hospital (Dave Bautista) and a young doctoral student (Brittany Snow) who are forced to form an alliance of convenience during the invasion of a mysterious, heavily armed militia. The film was shot on the original location.
