The L or 14th Street  - Canarsie Local is a subway line on the New York City Subway . The sign is light gray in the stations and on the official subway map as it uses the BMT Canarsie Line through Manhattan .

The L operates 24/7 between 8th Avenue in Manhattan and Canarsie , Brooklyn . It always runs as a local, because firstly there are no express tracks and it is the only line that uses the BMT Canarsie Line. That's why it's the only normal line in New York.

Therefore it is often used as a guinea pig for new techniques, such as: B. OPTO (One Person Train Operation), display boards with waiting times in real time or CBTC (Computer Based Train Control).

Impending "shutdown" when repairing the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy

In 2012, the tunnel was flooded and severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy . The original plan was to completely renovate the damaged cables and cable ducts from spring 2019. For this, the route should be closed for 15 months, which led to the resentment of many New Yorkers, as the route is used by around 400,000 people daily. In early January 2019, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that an alternative plan was being developed that would allow the route to be closed only at night and on weekends. This plan provides for the laying of the cables and partial renovation of the cable ducts. Sensors are supposed to monitor the integrity of the cable ducts.
