The Franklin Avenue shuttle is only four stations one of the shortest subway lines of the New York subway network . It runs from the subway station Franklin Avenue / Fulton Street parallel to the eponymous Franklin Avenue to Prospect Park . It is the only line in New York that is (partly) single-track. The line runs around the clock, seven days a week.
The Brooklynites ( Brooklynites ) also know the line as Prospect Park Choo Choo . At the MTA , the line is also referred to as "Line S" to differentiate it from the other shuttles, the Rockaway Shuttle (Line H) and the 42nd Street Shuttle (Line 0).
history
In 1878 the route was opened by the Brooklyn, Flatbush and Coney Island Railway , which is the direct predecessor of the BMT Brighton Line . Initially, this route was connected to the Long Island Rail Road . In 1883 it was transferred to Fulton Street Elevated (predecessor of lines A and C), which was then operated by the Kings County Elevated Railway , but was later taken over by BRT. The Brighton Line was electrified with overhead lines in 1899 and by 1907 all intersections were removed.
Until 1920, the Brighton Line ran on Franklin Av. Line , but then a more direct subway line between DeKalb Ave and Prospect Park went into operation. However, direct trains continued to run from Franklin Av to Coney Island until 1963, when the shuttle service, which is still practiced today, was introduced.
On November 1, 1918, the Malbone Street railway accident occurred in the entrance to Prospect Park station, the worst accident in the history of the New York subway.
