Metropolitan Transportation Authority
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority ( MTA ) is a state-owned transportation company in the US state of New York .
The public transport network covers a supply area of 13,000 square kilometers with a population of 14.6 million people. The coverage area includes the city of New York , Long Island and twelve other counties in the state of New York and two counties in Connecticut . The New York City subway , buses and trains operated by the MTA transport an average of 7.8 million people every weekday. This corresponds to an annual passenger volume of around 2.4 billion people.

The MTA maintains one of the largest metro networks in the world. Most metro lines and many MTA bus lines run daily and all year round without a nightly break, a total of 341 rail, underground and bus lines have been set up. The MTA owns around 8,590 railway and metro cars to operate these lines and has the world's largest fleet of metro cars.
