Philip Francis "Phil" Rizzuto (* 25 September 1917 in Brooklyn , New York City ; † 14. August 2007 in West Orange , New Jersey ) was an American baseball player of the Major League Baseball . His nickname was Scooter .

biography

Phil Rizzuto spent his entire career in his hometown with the New York Yankees , almost exclusively in the shortstop position . He played his first game in the major league on April 13, 1941. From 1943 to 1945 he served like many of his professional colleagues in the American armed forces. Rizzuto spent this time in the US Navy and played on the US Navy baseball team. His career took a turn in 1949 and 1950. If he was number seven or eight in the Yankees' stroke cycle until 1949, he was able to conquer the position of lead-off batters this season thanks to his good performances . This season he finished second behind Ted Williams in the MVP election , and in 1950 he won this title race. Not least because of his outstanding defensive performance, the Yankees were able to win seven World Series titles with him .

After his playing career, which ended on August 25, 1956, Rizzuto moved to the commentary team of the Yankees and spent the next 40 years there. His use of the phrase Holy Cow became legendary .

Since 1985 his shirt number 10 is no longer awarded by the Yankees; In 1994 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame , a decision Yankees fans had been waiting for a long time.

He also became known through his participation in the song Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meat Loaf , on which he can be heard as a play-by-play announcer.

Phil Rizzuto died on August 14, 2007 a few weeks before he would have turned 90.
