Victor / Victoria is a mix-up comedy directed by Blake Edwards starring Julie Andrews and James Garner from 1982 . It is a remake of the German UFA sound film Viktor and Viktoria from 1933. The material was performed as a musical on Broadway in 1995, also with Julie Andrews in the title role and under the title Victor / Victoria .

action

In Paris in the early 1930s Victoria Grant is unemployed as an opera singer. While auditioning in a nightclub, she meets the gay chansonnier Carol Todd ("Toddy"), who is fired shortly afterwards. They meet again in a restaurant, where the attempt to collapse the bill with the help of a cockroach takes a somewhat unusual course. They team up and Toddy has a brilliant business idea:

In the suit that Toddy's ex-lover left with him, they pass Victoria off as a female impersonator "Victor" in order to get an engagement as a female actor in a nightclub. Victoria becomes "Count Victor Grazinski" and Toddy becomes his lover. Right from his very first appearance, Victor becomes the darling of Paris.

The seedy nightclub king King Marchand from Chicago also sits in the audience at this gig . Initially repelled by a man who represents a woman, he is more and more fascinated and begins to doubt his own sexual orientation. When he then knows the truth, however, the two begin - at first secretly - a relationship. It is a relationship between a woman who pretends to be a man who portrays a woman on stage and a businessman who does business with gangsters but pretends not to be a gangster. This secret and uptight relationship seems hopeless and consequently leads to a dead end.

Then, however, King's vengeful ex-lover Norma appears with his gangster business partner, who wants to use the alleged homosexuality to boot him off on business. At the same time, a frustrated nightclub owner, whose establishment has been devastated and closed because of Victoria and Toddy, has found out the truth with the help of a detective and now wants to expose the "fraudsters".

However, the three manage to convince both the gangsters that Victoria is a woman and the police that Victor is a man - by the fact that Toddy takes on the role and appearance with great success. With that, Victoria's career as a man comes to an end, King can openly acknowledge her and keep his business, and Toddy is also successful professionally again.

backgrounds

The film is a remake of the UFA film Viktor and Viktoria from 1933 (written and directed by Reinhold Schünzel with Renate Müller and Hermann Thimig ). Under Reinhold Schünzel's direction, a French version with Meg Lemonnier and Julien Carette was created in parallel , which was released as Georges et Georgette . Another film adaptation by Karl Anton from 1957 with Johanna von Koczian and Georg Thomalla fell far short of the quality of the original and the Blake Edwards version.
