SOB - Hollywood's Last Howler is an American satire by Blake Edwards from 1981. Edwards allegedly processed his own experiences during the shooting with this "film in the film" about the creation of a "blockbuster" and the conditions behind the scenes of a large film company on his 1970 film Darling Lili .

action

The new film from acclaimed director Felix Farmer turns out to be a total flop. Devastated, he makes one suicide attempt after the other, and in doing so he endangers his fellow human beings more than himself. Then he comes up with the brilliant idea to improve his good musical with revealing sex scenes. His wife, a so far “clean” star, is supposed to bare her bosom. - Felix's film is going to be a box-office hit, everyone benefits - except Felix! After a targeted shot from the gun of a security guard, he is quite dead, which does not prevent the “mourners” from abusing Felix for their own interests. A bizarre competition for the rights to its existence begins.

criticism

"Blake Edwards stayed far below his possibilities when staging the nice story: partly ironic, partly macabre, partly speculative punchlines, of which only a few really spark."

background

The abbreviation SOB should stand for "Standard Operational Bullshit". - In the German version, the actor Robert Webber says “Saublöde lazy branch shit”.

The film was nominated for both a Golden Globe ("Best Motion Picture - Comedy / Musical", 1982) and a Golden Raspberry ("Worst Director" and "Worst Screenplay"). This ambivalence was also made clear by the lack of commercial success. Although the film flopped, many movie buffs consider it Edwards' best film and one of the most successful Hollywood satires .

According to the information on the cover, the film is cut by seven minutes in the Swiss version.
