Loretta Swit (born November 4, 1937 in Passaic , New Jersey ) is an American actress .

life and career

Swit was born the daughter of Polish immigrants, her father was an upholsterer, her mother a housewife. Against her parents' wishes, she studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan . She got to know Gene Frankel , at whose "Repertory Theater" she completed her apprenticeship and whom she later made her manager.

Initially, Swit was successful as a stage actress and toured the USA with the Any Wednesday ensemble . In 1975, she played her first role in a Broadway play, as they in time seed next year , the main role of Doris of Ellen Burstyn took that it previously with a Tony Award was awarded.

She also played in television series such as Hawaii Five-Zero and Mannix . She became known for her role in the successful series M * A * S * H as Major Margaret "Hotlips" Houlihan. After Alan Alda , who starred in all 256 episodes of the series, Swit made the most appearances in the series' 11 seasons, namely 240. Only Alda and Swit starred in both the pilot and the final episode.

In 1981 she played the role of Cagney in the television film that served as the template for the series Cagney and Lacey ; however, due to her contract with M * A * S * H , she was unable to continue the role. In 1986, she played a leading role in the black comedy Too Late - The Bomb Flies .

In 2009 she was seen again in a Broadway musical; she played in the classic 42nd Street by Chris Manos , with which she has a longstanding friendship.

Private life

From 1983 to 1995 Swit was married to actor Dennis Holahan . She is very committed to animal welfare and was named "Woman of the Year" by the Animal Protection Institute of America. A hobby: she has been painting with watercolors and charcoal for decades.

Awards

She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1989) as well as two Emmys (1980, 1982) and three People's Choice Awards for her role in M * A * S * H. In 1991 she received a Sarah Siddons Award for her work at the Chicago theater. She also received the Genie Award and the Silver Satellite Award.
