Cagney & Lacey is an American television series that aired on CBS from October 8, 1981 to May 16, 1988 on American television. It comprises seven seasons with a total of 126 episodes and four feature films. It tells the story of two police officers from the 14th precinct in New York . The very different women are played by Sharon Gless in the role of Christine Cagney and Tyne Daly in the role of Mary Beth Lacey.
Christine Cagney is a confident and career-oriented single woman, while Mary Beth Lacey has a happy marriage and does not see her job alone as the focus of her life. She often feels torn between family and work. The two women share a valuable friendship, even if they keep clashing.
Cagney & Lacey was one of the first television series in which women were not primarily used as decorative accessories. They were portrayed as equal, successful women in a male-dominated work environment. Just like their male colleagues, they had to cope with their tasks and at the same time also had to struggle with normal everyday problems.
The series has received several awards.
action
Christine Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey, two police officers from the 14th precinct in New York, are shown in their everyday work. The two very different women are shown in their daily work, which partly consists of routine work, but also includes highly explosive cases such as rape , prostitution , drug trafficking or child abuse , which require their full commitment.
The friendship of the two women and their family background are also discussed. Christine Cagney is an independent single woman with rotating relationships, while Mary Beth Lacey is married for many years and is a multiple mother.
background
production
The series was preceded by the 1981 television film Cagney & Lacey , in which the role of Christine Cagney was played by Loretta Swit . When the series went into production, Meg Foster took over the part, as Swit was not available due to long-term engagements in the anti-war satire M * A * S * H. After only two episodes, the series was canceled again. In addition to the low ratings, the station was particularly disturbed by the portrayal of Christine Cagney, who seemed too career-oriented to them and did not correspond to the traditional view of femininity. In addition to the rather robust Mary Beth Lacey, who was played by Tyne Daly in the pilot film, a more feminine female character was desired as a counterpart and cast the role of Christine Cagney again after the six episodes filmed with Foster and engaged Sharon Gless.
In 1983 the series was canceled again after the second season by the US broadcaster CBS due to insufficient audience ratings, but fans of Cagney & Lacey tried to save the series through letter campaigns and protests in the print media. The increasing rates of repetitions finally convinced those responsible to let Cagney & Lacey produce new seasons . Due to the delay, only seven episodes could be filmed in the third year. After the series ended in 1988, four television films were made in 1994. Only in the first film can you see some of their old colleagues in addition to Christine Cagney, Mary Beth and Harvey Lacey.
The series was shot in Los Angeles and New York City .
Broadcast in Germany
From August 27, 1987, Sat.1 broadcast 39 episodes of the series for the first time at weekly intervals. The station showed episodes from seasons two to four. The last episode (56 The Witness ) was shown on June 9, 1988.
Three months later, between September 8, 1988 and June 15, 1989, another 40 episodes from seasons five to seven followed once a week. From October 1989 a further eleven episodes of the last season followed; 29 episodes were still waiting for their German premiere.
In September 1990 the last two episodes ( FBI intervened ) were shown for the first time in one evening. From 1991 on, 16 episodes that had not yet been shown followed. The remaining 11 episodes - mainly from the 5th season - only had their German television premiere in August 1995. These episodes had already been dubbed before Edgar Ott's death in 1993, so that he was the German voice of Lt. Samuels is heard. Sat.1 had shown all episodes with Sharon Gless until October 1995; only the six episodes with Meg Foster were still missing.
Mary Beth Lacey was voiced by Traudel Haas in the first 39 episodes (1987/88) and by Susanna Bonaséwicz in all subsequent episodes . Christine Cagney was dubbed throughout by Alexandra Lange .
The ZDF broadcast the first two television films in 1996. The other two followed a year later at VOX in reverse order. Cagney and Lacey were voiced again by Alexandra Lange and Susanna Bonaséwicz.
From July 2010, the Austrian broadcaster Puls 4 broadcast a German version of the six episodes with Meg Foster for the first time. The premiere in Germany followed in 2012 at sixx . Traudel Haas could be heard again as Mary Beth Lacey and Roland Hemmo replaced the late Edgar Ott. All other speakers agree with the Sat.1 processing. These episodes were dubbed at least 10 years before they were broadcast, as Hermann Ebeling , who died in March 2000, can also be heard here as Det. LaGuardia.
